Cowboys kicker Brandon Aubrey credits wife for his massive career shift from pro soccer to NFL

Aubrey has yet to miss a single field goal in his rookie season but only started playing football just few years ago.

Chances are, asking a Dallas Cowboys fan about picking their top 5 Cowboys of the season so far, the list would probably go as follows: quarterback Dak Prescott, cornerback DaRon Bland, linebacker Micah Parsons, left tackle Demarcus Lawrence, and kicker Brandon Aubrey. Yes, a kicker is one of the best players for the Star Helmets this season.

Then the question arises: how does a kicker get mixed into that conversation? It’s not a coincidence; Aubrey will put up 90 points for the Cowboys in 2023. That’s not the extraordinary part, because several teams have names that can record similar numbers. The three that come to mind are Ravens’ Justin Tucker, Raiders’ Daniel Carlson, and Falcons’ Younghoe Koo.

Yet 28-year-old Brandon Aubrey is currently the talk of the ‘Americas Game.’ And the reason behind all the chatter is that he hasn’t missed a single field goal (30/30), and more importantly, it’s his rookie season in the NFL.

To prove how accurate the Missouri native is, on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles, he dispatched a 52 and a 59-yarder. However, it was the FG in the first quarter that has forced many to believe that the Cowboys have found a gem. Aubrey buried a 60-yarder with just a minute left on the clock, which could have been good from 66 or even 67.

However, the interesting part of his story is that he only started practicing kicking a football four years ago. Before that, he was a soccer player with the MLS franchise Toronto FC. So what made him change his mind? Aubrey revealed that part of his story during an appearance on the Dan Partick Show,

Well, the story is my wife [Jenn], we were sitting and watching football like we did every Sunday. She mentioned to me, ‘Yeah, I think you could do that.’

The story of Brandon Aubrey and his wife, Jenn

It’s a cool tale. Brandon and Jenn met while studying at Notre Dame. While Aubrey tried out for the soccer program, Jenn was part of the lacrosse team. She later graduated with a double major in finance and Chinese. As per her Instagram, she is a pilot and aircraft dispatcher.

The happy couple made things official by tying the knot on January 4, 2019. Their wedding wasn’t massive, but rather a private family affair with close friends and relatives.

There were dark days amidst all the happiness. Just 11 months later, Jenn had to go through a tough brain surgery. Luckily for both her and Brandon, the surgery was a success. He later thanked everyone on social media who had sent well wishes.

Just before the operation, she advised Brandon to switch to becoming a spot kicker. He trained with Mississippi State kicker Brian Egan and later spent two seasons with the USFL side the Birmingham Stallions, where he won a couple of championships and was named to the All-USFL Team for 2022.

According to Spotrac, Brandon Aubrey signed a three-year, $2.695 million contract with the Dallas Cowboys in the offseason. He will earn around $898,333 per year.
