The quarterback’s new contract could pay him nearly $55-60 million annually.

Cowboys QB Dak Prescott could land up with a record-breaking $60 million per year contract extension this off season

A big payday could be in the works for Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott after his MVP-caliber season. A report from NFL Insider Jordan Schultz via the Speak on FS1 with Emmanuel Acho confirmed that the negotiations regarding his contract extension which is due after this season will make him one of the, if not the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL.

Schultz said,

He's going to get between 55-60 million. We've already seen Joe Burrow get that 55 number, Dak Prescott has an opportunity to reset it. I think the floor is around 55. Both sides highly motivated...he has a no trade and no tag clause...Jerry wants to get that thing done.

If $55 million a year is the floor, Dak Prescott’s long-term contract extension could shake the QB market, and not in a good way. While he deserves every penny for how he has played this season, the contract extensions of QBs that took place before this season have already changed the market because, at this point, teams are setting new records every year with the amount they are paying to their quarterbacks.

Dak Prescott could eclipse Joe Burrow as the highest-paid QB in the NFL

Presently, Joe Burrow is the highest-paid quarterback with $55 million per year, followed by Patrick Mahomes, who makes $52.6 million. Since Schultz has said that $55 million is the FLOOR for the negotiations, it means more or less; the figure is bound to just go up from there.

The insider also stated,

He's playing like an MVP, he has an opportunity to win the Super Bowl and he's a Dallas Cowboys quarterback in the sense of (Roger) Staubach and (Troy) Aikman, that's the type of season he's having. He has earned it. We don't see great quarterbacks go to free agency, if he doesn't get paid, he becomes a free agent at around 31-years-old.

It will be safe to say that Jerry Jones would never let that happen.

Dak Prescott has had 30 touchdowns this season. He ranks first in the NFL in that regard. The Cowboys signal-caller has thrown for 3,892 yards, has 7 interceptions, and a QBR of 71.5, which is the third-best in the league.

Just two weeks back, he was the frontrunner for MVP and after he led the Cowboys to a dominant victory over the Philadelphia Eagles, his stock has just soared. A deep playoff run and a possible Super Bowl appearance would speak volumes and help the QB get additional leverage when he goes to the negotiation table concerning his contract. However, irrespective of it, Dak Prescott will get the bag this offseason.
