Dak Prescott: Will continue to be the Cowboys’ QB1, but at what cost?

Dak Prescott’s current contract is up after this season.

The Dallas Cowboys are one of the contenders for the NFC title this season. They have started the season with four wins in six games and enjoyed a bye in week 7. Their overall roster is great and the team is finally looking like a Super Bowl contender. The one player the team needed to have a big season is their QB Dak Prescott. Although he hasn’t set the NFL on fire, the QB has had a much better season than 2022.

Prescott came into the season on the back of a disastrous 2022 season. He led the league in interceptions and was under immense pressure to deliver heading into the 2023 season. Though there have been calls from fans to bench Prescott, he has been able to win games for the Cowboys. His current contract with the Dallas Cowboys is up in 2024 and the expectation around the league and the Cowboys is that they will extend their longtime starter.

The Cowboys have shown faith in Prescott even in his worst year. According to Diana Russini of The Athletic, the Cowboys are not planning to make any changes to Prescott’s contract during this season. However, they are expected to extend Prescott in 2024. Russini stated on October 22:

Cowboys executive Stephen Jones told me while walking out of the Omni Hotel this week, ‘[Dak Prescott is] under contract now, but we’d like to do this after the season. Once the season is over, we will focus on that. Dak will be our quarterback.’

The Cowboys headed into the bye week with a win over the Los Angeles Chargers in week 6. There was a lot of criticism directed towards Prescott after the Cowboys’ humiliating defeat against the San Francisco 49ers in week 5. However, the QB performed well against the Chargers and led his team to victory. The Cowboys will play their next game against the Los Angeles Rams next Sunday.

Dak Prescott talks about the Cowboys’ much-needed win against the Chargers in week 6

The Dallas Cowboys went into the game against the Los Angeles Chargers on the back of a humiliating loss to their arch-rivals, the San Francisco 49ers. They needed a win against the Chargers and, fortunately for them, they got one. Their QB Dak Prescott talked about it afterwards.

Prescott told the reporters after the game:

S*** yeah. Yeah, it was a must-win. We talked about after last week not allowing this thing to landslide, and obviously I think a win like this allows you to really close that book [loss versus 49ers in Week 5].

The Cowboys will look to continue their winning momentum after a bye in week 7 in their next game against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday. Prescott hasn’t been able to lead the Cowboys to the Super Bowl so far. Maybe he will this year.
