Earlier this week, the Denver Broncos shocked the entire league by announcing their decision to bench their franchise quarterback Russell Wilson in favor of their backup QB Jarrett Stidham. Later, reports suggested that the team gave an ultimatum to Wilson about his benching back in October and now the veteran signal-caller has confirmed it.

On Friday, the 35-year-old quarterback addressed the media and was asked about the rumors about the ultimatum. Wilson confirmed that the rumors were indeed true. He revealed that the team approached him during their bye week and informed him of their decision.

They came up to me during the bye week and beginning of the bye week, Monday or Tuesday, they told me if I didn’t change my contract, my injury guarantee, that I’d be benched the rest of the year.

Furthermore, Wilson expressed that he was disappointed by the team’s ultimatum. He claimed that he was excited about making a push for the playoffs after defeating the Kansas City Chiefs before the team dropped the bomb on him.

I was definitely disappointed about it. It was a process for the whole bye week. We had just come off beating the Chiefs. I was excited for us fighting for the playoffs and getting on a hot streak. The NFLPA and NFL got involved or whatever at some point.

The veteran quarterback was officially benched on Wednesday by the team. Despite the rumors, the Broncos’ head coach Sean Payton claimed that he made the surprising move because he wanted to see a spark in the offense. But, now, Wilson has confirmed the reports about the Broncos benching the quarterback since he wouldn’t waive the $37 million injury guarantee in his contract.

Russell Wilson was never going to restructure his contract

Furthermore, Wilson also went on to claim that he was never going to restructure his contract since he knew the risk involved in the physical sport of football.

But, despite the contract issues, Wilson claims he wants to play for the Broncos again and wants to win a championship in Denver. However, the Broncos might consider moving on from him in the upcoming off-season.

On the sporting side of things, the Broncos still have a shot at reaching the postseason. They are scheduled to take on the Los Angeles Chargers in their week 17 matchup. Wilson will be on the bench and Stidham will be leading them in the crucial game.
