Ex-Bears star Brian Urlacher wants the team to trade Justin Fields and draft No.1 prospect Caleb Williams in the upcoming draft

The Bears have the No. 1 overall pick for this year’s NFL Draft.

The Chicago Bears had an improved but still a poor 2023-24 season. The team’s quarterback Justin Fields had an inconsistent time on the field and hence failed to provide the necessary momentum to the team. Following this, a lot of debates are circling whether the team should be trading him and opt for college football wonder Caleb Williams.

In this context, Brian Urlacher, the Bears’ legend, opened up regarding the possible situation. Urlacher had 13 illustrious seasons as the linebacker of the team. When the former LB was asked whom would he be going for this season, the Bears’ LB said without any concern that the team should be going for Caleb Williams.

In the latest episode of Zach Gelb’s show, Urlacher said,

I think they have to take Caleb (Williams). I don't think there's any way around it this year. If you don't take him (and) it turns out to be great, um--But having said that, Justin Fields played good to end the season last year as well. It's tough.

The LB also had a staunch opinion about not taking CJ Stroud last year. Since the Bears had the No. 1 overall draft pick last year, but ultimately traded that with the Carolina Panthers for 2024’s draft pick.

I would have drafted C.J. Stroud last year.

Urlacher provided some coaching points for Bears camp

Amid all the upset noises, the Bears retained Matt Eberfleus as the head coach for the upcoming season. There were talks that he would go for Jim Harbaugh, who was hired by the Los Angeles Chargers, earlier this week. But the Bears did not go for him.

Nonetheless, Urlacher found that decision satisfying. He said that Eberfleus was a good coach and under him; the team performed well defensively. Hence, retaining him was a good decision.

The Bears couldn’t pay him what he’s going to be paid — or they could, but they won’t. They won’t pay him what he probably deserves. He’s a defensive coach, they played good defense.

It is to be seen whether the team goes for Caleb or decides to stay with Fields. There will be lots of eyes on the NFL Draft 2024 and how the Bears make the most out of it.
