Ex-Super Bowl MVP Kurt Warner reminds Bears of Giants’ ‘mistake’ of paying Daniel Jones $160 million amid Justin Fields-Caleb Williams saga

The NFL Network analyst believes Bears shouldn’t waste their advantage of No.1 pick.

This offseason, as the Chicago Bears hold the first draft pick, they have quite the dilemma surrounding Justin Fields and Caleb Williams. With the burden of having to make such a big decision, Hall of Famer Kurt Warner lends a piece of much-needed advice to the franchise to learn from the mistake of the New York Giants.

Heading into the 2024 offseason, the Bears have the power to set the course of the entire offseason as they have to decide whether to overlook the 7-10 regular season record and give quarterback Fields another chance or start fresh with top 2024 draft prospects– Williams or Jayden Daniels or Drake Maye.

In a recent conversation with NBC Sports Chicago, the former Super Bowl MVP addressed the Bears’ dilemma, saying:

They are weighing a tough decision. What I’ll say is when you get to the point, we’re at with quarterbacks in this league and what you have to pay them and what that means for your organization, you better know he’s the guy. That, to me, really is where teams get in trouble.

Kurt Warner saidHe highlighted how the Giants thought Daniel Jones was ‘that guy’ who could lead them to the Super Bowl LVIII and paid him $40 million, however, they are still behind the 8-ball and Jones hasn’t proved himself capable of doing so.

The NFL Network analyst compared Jones to Bears’ Fields, arguing both failed to prove themselves to be “that guy.” He gave a bit of blunt advice to them, saying:

I think you have to move on. You can’t just go pay that guy $50 million in hopes that those glimpses you saw turn into greatness.

Kurt Warner saidThe Hall of Famer further backed his argument saying:

If you have played for three years, you have to prove to me you’re that guy.

While talking about the Bears’ tough situation in the offseason, Warner told Chicago to use the advantage of having the No.1 pick to the fullest. He emphasized the fact that if the franchise is unsure about going forward with Fields, it means they too believe that the 2021 draft pick isn’t the one they are looking for.

In such a case scenario, Warner said:

You [Bears] got to go get the other No. 1 pick and move forward.

Kurt Warner saidThe crucial thing for the franchise here is to consider Warner’s advice, given the thorough evaluation he has done of Fields.

Moreover, the Hall of Famer also cleared that he isn’t saying Fields can’t improve his game, but he is looking at the bigger picture for the Bears and for that, they shouldn’t waste their advantage of No.1 pick.
