Keyshawn Johnson smells ‘risk’ in Cowboys holding off Dak Prescott’s contract extension

In the past three years, Dak Prescott has been the leader in passer rating.

When the Dallas Cowboys qualified for the playoffs with the NFC East title, all anyone could talk about was the star quarterback’s contract extension. Given, his current contract expires in 2024 and he had his best season last year.

The contract speculation heightened to such a level that even the franchise owner Jerry Jones hinted at offering Dak Prescott a big extension in the offseason. It has been over a month since the offseason began, but there has been no talk about the franchise offering the quarterback anything.

The reason if you must ask could be the one playoff game, that eliminated the Cowboys from the playoffs. Prescott was heavily criticized after the game, by both analysts and fans, resulting in creating uncertainties relating to his contract. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport recently reported that Prescott and the Cowboys have come up to a mutual understanding of holding the extension talk for some time.

Keyshawn Johnson highlighted the risks of postponing Dak Prescott’s contract extension

Though the franchise is confident in having the quarterback for another season, sports analyst Keyshawn Johnson has a different take on the whole situation. In the recent episode of the Undisputed, the former NFL wide receiver talked about the risk the Cowboys are taking by holding off Prescott’s contract extension.

Johnson said:

It’s a bad idea because it’s a risk. It’s a risk. You are getting ready to allow a guy who’s been consistent across the board at the quarterback position since he’s entered the National Football League as a starter. He has won games, he has gone to playoffs, he has led the league in touchdowns. I can go on and on and on.

Despite being a fan of the Cowboys’ divisional rivals, the Philadelphia Eagles, Johnson couldn’t help himself from highlighting the amazing stats of the quarterback. As in the past three seasons, in the 30 games he played, Prescott is the leader in passer rating, even above Aaron RodgersJoe Burrow, and Patrick Mahomes.

Johnson also highlighted that Jones isn’t completely wrong with his stance as Prescott hasn’t won a Super Bowl despite staying with the team for the longest. However, if they let him go, “Dak will be the #1 QB available by far on the open market,” said Johnson. He argued that there would be more than ten teams next season looking for a solid quarterback and if Prescott would be available in the market, it wouldn’t take him team to get his desired numbers.
