The Kansas City Chiefs have had an added layer of media attention throughout this season.

Steve Young, the legendary quarterback who played for the San Francisco 49ers feels bad for Patrick Mahomes. The reason being, No. 15 is constantly in the media limelight and has to watch every step when he’s out in the public and even during the games of the Kansas City Chiefs.

While Mahomes has had a lot of media attention on him since his stellar rookie season, this time Young is blaming Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift‘s relationship for escalating the media attention around him.

Steve Young told ESPN’s Seth Wickersham that Travis Kelce’s relationship is an unprecedented event in football.

It's the biggest thing that's ever happened to football, from the outside. When it happened, I felt bad for Patrick.

Young saw the implications of Kelce-Swift’s relationship upon the rest of the team and especially on Mahomes because he is the face of the franchise.

Ever since news broke out that Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift are a thing, it has been absolute mayhem at Chiefs’ games. Fans flock in large groups hoping to catch a glimpse of the iconic pop star and watch the game. Moreover, the broadcast focuses on Swift very frequently and the cameras always capture her reactions to the game.

Steve Young believes the entire Chiefs team has more pressure than ever on them now owing to the media attention

The Kansas City Chiefs have been in the news throughout the regular season, it does not matter if the team is winning or losing. What is Taylor Swift doing? Where did she and Kelce go? How far along are they in their relationship? The focus has been on the couple and the fact that the Chiefs had a mediocre season has not impacted the attention they are getting by one bit.

Steve Young further added,

It’s this thing. When you have an outside force, it puts this weight on everyone. They don’t feel it necessarily, but if you step back, it’s like, holy hell. You’ve got this thing you’re dragging around. Everyone has to manage it. Anyone who says it’s not part of it is lying to themselves.

The Chiefs have struggled all season long. The media attention while annoying is not the biggest reason. The team’s issues stem from the fact that Patrick Mahomes has looked mortal for the first time in his career, he has been unable to make things look easy as he did in the years before. He is struggling because the team does not have consistent production from its wide receiver core. The two time MVP has been forced to rely on Travis Kelce alone.

Rashee Rice has been the only wideout who has played well. Apart from that Kadarius Toney has let the team down on numerous occasions by dropping crucial passes and making trivial errors that cost the team in a big way. Skyy Moore and Marquez Valdes-Scantling have been present but they have not stepped up to the plate like they were expected to.

The Kansas City Chiefs head into the Divisional Round after beating the Miami Dolphins. Despite their issues, can this team make yet another successful Super Bowl run remains the biggest question.
