Richard Sherman launches an attack on Colin Cowherd over ‘unnecessary’ criticism of 49ers QB Brock Purdy

It looks like Richard Sherman doesn’t appreciate the level of criticism his favorite Brock Purdy faces, despite leading the San Francisco 49ers to the NFC championship game as the top-seeded team.

The former NFL cornerback jumped straight to the quarterback’s defense when he saw the harsh criticism by Fox Sports’ Colin Cowherd over Purdy’s play against the Green Bay Packers in the divisional round.

Midway through the third quarter, the Niners were utterly dominated by the Jordan Love-led Packers, who were in the lead at 21-14. If it wasn’t for Purdy’s winning drive, the magical 12-5 season would’ve gone down the drain. And that seemed to be Sherman’s defense when he called out Cowherd for his poor facts.

You're criticizing a guy who's started for a year and a half like he's a 10-year Hall of Fame vet. But you don't give him the credit of the 10-year Hall of Fame vet.

Sherman said on the “All Facts No Brakes” podcast.

You're saying he's a more talented quarterback? That's you hiding behind rhetoric or hiding behind words because you can't statistically back up what you're saying.

He fired at Cowherd.

He also demanded the stats based on which Cowherd criticized Purdy, as the former 49ers CB argued if Purdy had thrown the interceptions like his counterpart Love, then “he would get up there and double down on what he said.”

Though Purdy and the Niners didn’t play their best due to the unprecedented rainy weather, in the end, what matters is that they won the game and advanced to the NFC championship. Sherman also acknowledged where his former team lagged, but he strongly opposed the criticism that Purdy had to face, as he called it unfair.

Keyshawn Johnson remains doubtful over Brock Purdy

On one hand, where Sherman gave his blind support to Purdy, his co-host Keyshawn Johnson thinks otherwise.

Throughout the season, the former NFL wide receiver has laid down his support for the Niners; however, he also thinks QB Purdy is one of the biggest reasons why 24-year-olds aren’t easily trusted by outsiders.

The young quarterback proved himself well on the field since he took over after Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance. But he remains doubtful by many. His critics refer to him as a ‘system’ quarterback or the famous ‘game manager.’

Purdy’s criticisms aren’t anything new for the Niners. Perhaps there’s only one way for the young quarterback to silence his critics, and that’s by taking his team to the Super Bowl LVIII.
