Travis Kelce says it’s “an honor” to be named a team captain for the Kansas City Chiefs, after being selected for the role by his teammates.

Kelce, 34, was named an offensive captain for the NFL playoffs alongside quarterback Patrick Mahomes and running back Jerick McKinnon.

In a video of the team captains photoshoot that the Chiefs shared on social media Wednesday, Kelce explained how head coach Andy Reid typically chooses team captains and why he believes being chosen for the playoffs is a distinguished accomplishment.

In the video, Kelce says Reid, 65, typically switches up the team captains for every regular season game. “A lot of the times, it’s a guy that’s from the city that we’re playing or a guy that’s from the team that we’ve played, and he gets them a chance to lead this team into battle,” Kelce says.

But when it comes to the playoffs, Reid holds a team vote. “He lets the players vote on who the captains are and who the guys are that emerged throughout the entire season, whose going to lead us into battle for the remainder of the season,” Kelce explains.

“That just means it’s that big of an honor to be able to be named a captain, to be on that sheet of paper that he’s handing around that guys have to choose from,” Kelce says. “I know every single year I’ve been that I’ve been extremely appreciative and there’s a lot of pride in my chest to be able to lead these guys out there.”

Kelce, whose romance with Taylor Swift has been the talk of the NFL this season, has etched another impressive year onto his resume. The Chiefs starting tight end lead the team in receiving yards this season, helping the team to an 11-6 regular season record and their eighth-straight AFC West division championship.

Kelce and the Chiefs defeated the Miami Dolphins in the first round of the NFL playoffs last week, as they try to defend their Super Bowl LVII title from last year.

Kansas City will travel to Buffalo, New York on Sunday afternoon for the divisional round. If the Chiefs beat the Buffalo Bills and go on to win the AFC Championship Game the following week, they will play in Super Bowl LVIII on Feb. 11.

The team appears relaxed heading into the next round — at least by the looks of its quarterback. The Chiefs razzed Mahomes in the caption of the video for wearing a pair of white Crocs to the shoot and acting surprised when he was called out by the team’s photographer.

“What do you want me to do with these shoes…?” the photographer asks Mahomes, as the quarterback casually strolls up in a two-piece tan suit and the white shoes.

“What? Do I need shoes?” a surprised Mahomes laughs in response before shrugging off the fashion faux pas.

“Surely QB1 didn’t wear crocs to the playoff captains shoot…” the team captioned the clip, alongside a crying laughing emoji.

The Chiefs play the Bills on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. ET on CBS.
