Sanders is currently the head coach of college football team Colorado Buffaloes.

Could the Cowboys Nation one day see Deion Sanders managing their team? Colin Cowherd gave an intriguing answer on a recent episode of The Herd.

The FOX sports analyst and fellow contributor to the show, Jason McIntyre, brought up Sanders’ name while discussing the Cowboys coaching conundrum. Sanders is sticking around with the Colorado Buffaloes for at least one more year. By then, his son, who is the quarterback for the Buffs, Shedeur Sanders, will become eligible to announce himself for the NFL Draft.

McIntyre argued that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is already plotting a future head coaching change, keeping Sanders in mind. Jones has the luxury of bringing in old relationships, with Sanders being a former cowboy.

Deion Sanders is staying in Colorado to coach his son [Shedeur]. His son is going to come out in the draft next year. Did Jerry say, ‘Let me keep [Mike] McCarthy? We will give him one more chance. After that, we are going to bring in Deion Sanders’.

McIntyre told Cowherd

While there’s no confirmation that it’s a viable option, Cowherd’s response left much to be desired. He neither agreed nor denied McIntyre’s hypothesis.

I don't think it's crazy.

Deion Sanders’ contract details with the Colorado Buffaloes

The Hall of Fame running back began his coaching tenure with Division 2 Jackson State, where he turned a dying football program into champions. Sanders won two championship titles and, along with him, helped several players carve out a career in the sport.

Afterward, he switched from JS to Boulder Country and became the head coach of the Buffaloes. He brought his sons Shedeur and Silo Sanders with him to Colorado. He also completely revamped the roster by releasing a whole host of old players and adding more than 60 new faces to start the rebuild process.

Wild theory of Jerry Jones making Deion Sanders Cowboys' coach in 2025 amid Shedeur Sanders' draft buzz catches fire

Despite the overwhelming skepticism about his methods, Deion Sanders promised to bring the good times to Boulder. He started by beating 2022 CFP finalists TCU, followed by Nebraska and Colorado State. It was enough to persuade the Buffaloes management to hand him a 5-year, $29.5 million contract, making him the 32nd-highest-paid coach in college football.

However, the first season ended with just four wins from 12 games. But Shedeur’s performances led him to be in the mix for the best player in college football (3,230 yards, 27 touchdowns, and only 3 interceptions).

Whether Jerry Jones decides to move on from Mike McCarthy after the 2024 season, Deion Sanders isn’t a bad shout. But he has no previous experience coaching an NFL team, and to replace McCarthy with Sanders does sound like a massive rebuild plan.

Then there’s the case of McIntyre suggesting Jones draft Shedeur for the Cowboys. But then what happens to Dak Prescott? Not to mention, he is due a contract extension of his own. And going by Jones’ word, before losing against the Packers on a wildcard, he believed Prescott to be the highest-paid player in the NFL.
