Beyoncé recently filed a petition in the United States Tax Court challenging the Internal Revenue Service’s claims that she owes about $2.7 million in taxes and penalties.

According to Business Insider, the 41-year-old singer of Break My Soul asked the court earlier this month to reevaluate an IRS Notice of Deficiency imposed in January.

The IRS issued the notice stating that Beyoncé owes $805,850 for 2018 and $1,442,747 for 2019.  The organization claimed that she owes a total of $449,719.40 in fines between 2018 and 2019. After that, she filed the petition, asking the IRS to re-evaluate.

She has requested a trial in Los Angeles, according to documents acquired by People, though it is unclear when it would happen.

According to a statement, the singer’s attorney Michael C. Cohen said to People, “We are working with the IRS and anticipate that the matter will be resolved shortly.”

Page Six claimed that they have paperwork from the US Tax Court providing proof that Beyonce had submitted a petition on April 17. According to these records, the petition claimed that the IRS had made mistakes in regard to her 2018 and 2019 tax forms.

Beyonce’s attorneys stated in the petition that certain that errors were made in the calculation of her taxes. Apparently, one of the mistakes is the IRS’s refusal to accept charity work as deductibles. The singer allegedly spent a sizable sum throughout the tax year in charitable contributions.

However, Forbes reported that the IRS has determined that 20% of the underlying tax amount is owed. Hence, petitioners typically aren’t required to pay until the case has been resolved. Therefore, she won’t have to pay the 20% charge until the lawsuit has been resolved.

Over the course of her career, the Grammy winner has contributed to various charities. Furthermore, in 2013, she established the BeyGOOD Foundation.

According to its website, BeyGOOD was established to assist reduce economic inequalities, offer educational opportunities, and encourage entrepreneurship.

Moreover, Beyoncé claimed in her 20-page appeal that the IRS rejected millions of dollars’ worth of deductions. This includes $868,766 related to a rollover charitable gift from 2018. She also claimed any penalties for unpaid taxes shouldn’t be imposed because she “has acted reasonably and in good faith.”
