When legendary directors Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola came out to openly criticize Marvel movies calling out the movies from the studio are not cinema or despicable at best. Indeed, their remarks have caused a huge uproar among fans and several industry professionals including Nicolas Cage.

No one has to agree with them really, but the remarks have created a controversial wave. Right now, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is one of the leading superhero movie-producing giants with back-to-back hit franchises. Also, the fandom of these movies is insanely astonishing.
Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola Debacle
Nicolas Cage defended Marvel Studios from Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Scorsese
The tediously long wrangling between The Marvel Studios and acclaimed directors Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola has caused a huge uproar among comic book fans. First, Scorsese significantly created the anti-marvel cinematic dispute in 2019 saying the movie has now become “amusement parks” explicitly targeting Marvel movies. Later, in an interview with Empire, the director added that the value of a film “that’s like a theme park film, for example, the Marvel-type pictures,” (via The Guardian). Where the “theatres become amusement parks, that’s a different experience. I was saying earlier, it’s not cinema, it’s something else,” he added. The Godfather director Francis Ford Coppola joined in celebrating Scorsese’s comment.
“When Martin Scorsese says that the Marvel pictures are not cinema, he’s right because we expect to learn something from cinema, we expect to gain something, some enlightenment, some knowledge, some inspiration. I don’t know that anyone gets anything out of seeing the same movie over and over again. Martin was kind when he said it’s not cinema. He didn’t say it’s despicable, which I just say it is,” Coppola said (via The Guardian).
The exact reason for the director’s hatred for Marvel’s superhero movies is very much in the shadows but Coppola’s nephew Nicolas Cage begs to differ the comments of the directors. Also, the actor hinted that the directors may worry about the fact that big-budget superhero movies might take over the small indie movies, which Cage believes is not going to be.

Nicolas Cage
Cage doesn’t have to follow his uncle Coppola’s bombshell directed at Marvel rather the actor chose to have his contrasting opinion on the matter defending his love for comic books and the studio behind popularizing the genre. Cage’s involvement with the Marvel studios goes deeper than anyone can imagine, in fact, the actor’s stage name was directly inspired by the MCU character Luke Cage. Speaking on the debacle, Cage said that he doesn’t understand the conflict. “I don’t agree with them on that perception or opinion,” Cage told GQ, (via The Guardian).
“Marvel has done a really excellent job of entertaining the whole family. They put a lot of thought into it. It’s definitely had a big progression from when I was doing the first two Ghost Rider movies. Kevin Feige, or whoever is behind that machine, has found a masterful way of weaving the stories together and interconnecting all the characters. What could be wrong with wholesome entertainment that is appealing to parents and children, and gives people something to look forward to? I don’t see what the issue is.”
Cage is not worried about the big superhero movies taking over the small-budget movies like Scorsese or his uncle. In the most recent career of Cage, the actor has appeared in a significant number of indie or small-budget movies. “I think that the movies that I make, like Pig or Joe, are not in any kind of conflict with Marvel movies,” Cage said. He certainly does not think that Marvel is going after $30m to $50m budget movies. They are in good shape.
