More than two decades on and Julia Roberts is seen here evoking her Pretty Woman roots.
The 46-year-old actress posed in an oversized man’s shirt for the December issue of Marie Claire US, reminiscent of one of her costumes from the 1990 film in which she co-starred with Richard Gere.
Roberts, who played prostitute Vivian in the movie, borrowed her client Edward’s shirt, played by Gere, to tone down her streetwalker style for a shopping trip on Beverly Hill’s famous Rodeo Drive
That looks familiar: Julia Roberts poses in an oversized man’s shirt for the December issue of Marie Claire US
Inspiration from Vivian? Roberts seen here in character in the 1990 film Pretty Woman, wearing co-star Richard Gere’s shirt for a shopping trip in Beverly Hills
For the Marie Claire shoot, Roberts wears only a white shirt – with sleeves rolled up – showing off her toned legs to full effect.
She completes the androgynous ensemble with a pair of men’s shoes.
During the interview, the A-list Hollywood star reveals she is actually very down-to-earth and family-oriented.
Doubleact: Roberts and Richard Gere in an iconic promotional shot from the movie
Roberts – who is playing Meryl Streep’s daughter in the upcoming film August: Osage County – gave real insight into her genuinely authentic lifestyle, admitting she cooks three meals a day, sews for her three children, and steers clear of the internet.
Julia – who won an Academy Award for her portrayal of Erin Brockovich – explains why she avoids social media.
‘It’s kind of like cotton candy,’ she said, referring to the wonderfully bottomless pit that is the internet.
A real star: The actress gave insight into her noble, homely habits and working with Meryl Streep in the Marie Claire interview
Classic: The 46-year-old Academy Award winning actress spoke of how she avoids the internet
‘It looks so appealing and you just can’t resist getting in there, and then you just end up with sticky fingers and it lasted an instant.’
And the Eat Pray Love actress refrains from typing her name into Google’s scary search box, too, noting that she can afford to live without the limitless supply of subjective opinions.
‘I have too much potential for collapse,’ she said, before adding her theories on why criticism comes so easily online: ‘There’s an anonymity that makes people feel safe to participate in hatefulness.’
Not that she can’t handle criticism in general, however.
‘I like a good old-fashioned fist fight if people are pissed off at each other,’ she explained
‘I just feel like if you’re really mad and want to have a fight, then put your dukes up.’
She also discussed her admiration of Hilary Clinton, her ‘personal hero’, and how she got the opportunity to sit in on the inspiring politician’s philanthropic meetings as a ‘fly on the wall.’
And hearing about the work of women’s groups in less fortunate parts of the world led Julia to reflect on and appreciate her own family practices.
‘It’s my privilege and an honour to cook three meals a day for my family, and its a luxury on a level that I didn’t even realize,’ the hardworking actress and mother said.
Julia has three children – twins Hazel and Phinnaeus, aged nine, and Henry, aged six – with her husband Danny Moder.
Julianne Nicholson, who plays Julia’s sister in the upcoming movie August: Osage County, gave even more insight into Julia’s homely habits.
‘I would go in the trailer, and she would be sewing sleeping bags for Hazel’s dolls,’ the actress said.
And it’s clear that family life is truly what drives the star’s happiness.
‘I feel super kind of happy,’ she gushed, when complimented by Marie Claire’s guest interviewer Ryan Murphy (Glee) on her appearance, explaining, ‘which I think translates to pretty, because my husband is home.’
Screen gem: Julia is an icon of film but explained how she still looks up immensely to Meryl Streep
And although her own career is enviable, it seems she still looks up to Meryl Streep with humble admiration – like most do.
Speaking about how she felt about the lead-up to working with the award-winning actress on the comedy/drama August: Osage County, she revealed, ‘I had many imaginary conversations with Meryl about working together.’
She explained to Marie Claire that it was the work of their agent Kevin Huvane – by whom the pair of actresses are both represented – that brought them together on the film.
‘As my career is slowing down, he thought, “I’ve got to figure this out before she brings it all to a screeching halt in favor of car pools,”’ she said in good humour, about a career that one can only imagine would never truly slow down unless she demanded that it be so.
