Bodybuilding icon Arnold Schwarzenegger recently took to social media to express his sorrow over the passing of Charly Kahr, an Austrian sports legend renowned for his exceptional coaching skills in alpine skiing. Known affectionately as ‘Downhill Charly,’ Kahr passed away on April 27 at the age of 91.

Schwarzenegger, a seven-time Mr. Olympia, shared his personal connection with Kahr, revealing that the late coach was not only an influential figure in the world of skiing but also a cherished friend and mentor to him. “Charly Kahr was an Austrian skiing legend.

Besides being a fantastic coach for the Austrian ski team, he was a great friend and ski instructor to me,” Schwarzenegger wrote in his heartfelt note.

The tribute highlighted Schwarzenegger’s long-standing passion for skiing, a sport he has enjoyed for decades.

Thanks to Kahr’s guidance, Schwarzenegger became a skilled skier, a lesser-known facet of his athletic prowess.

“I will always cherish our memories of hiking and skiing the Alps. What a life! My thoughts are with his family,” he added.

During his tenure as a coach, Kahr led the Austrian ski team to remarkable successes, including seven Olympic medals and thirteen Alpine Skiing World Cup titles.

His coaching career, marked by dedication and a desire to see his athletes succeed, concluded in 1985, but his impact on the sport remains undeniable.

On his 90th birthday, Kahr reflected on his career, stating, “I was a coach with heart and soul, I always wanted the best for everyone, including myself as a coach, and I did everything I could to make people successful.”

These words underscore his commitment and passion for skiing and coaching.

As the world of sports mourns the loss of such a pivotal figure, Schwarzenegger’s tribute brings to light the personal stories and relationships behind Kahr’s public successes.

While Charly Kahr may no longer be with us, his legacy continues to inspire and influence the world of alpine skiing and beyond.
