Miley Cyrus Cried While Filming the “Used to Be Young” Video After Seeing Her Mom on Set

Miley Cyrus got candid about the mixed emotions she felt while filming the music video for her latest single, “Used to be Young,” including seeing her mom on set.

The singer and actress dropped her new song this week, including a music video and a behind-the-scenes interview.

The “Used to Be Young” video features Cyrus planted in front of the camera, singing the lyrics with raw emotion. She’s also wearing a shirt with Mickey Mouse on it, as a nod to her Disney Channel days that launched her career.

In a statement released alongside her new project, Cyrus said the song is about “honoring who we’ve been, loving who we are and celebrating who we will become.”

While filming the music video, a visibly emotional Cyrus mouths the lyrics and said her tears came from seeing her mom while on set.

“It’s super emotional because I am kind of a mini-me of my mom and I could see her inside of the camera by using a technology where I could livestream with my mom from inside of the camera,” Cyrus said. “So, we could see each other and as she was dancing it just made me cry, it made me laugh, it brought up so many real emotions and I think it’s really letting people into true emotion, which I don’t feel we get to see very much these days.”

“Used to Be Young” is a raw ballad about Cyrus’s infamous partying days that made constant headlines nearly a decade ago. Cyrus was around 20 when her album Bangerz and subsequent wild reputation came about.

The lyrics to her new song reflect on that time:

“I know I used to be crazy/ I know I used to be fun/ You say I used to be wild/ I say I used to be young/ You tell me time has done changed me/ That’s fine, I’ve had a good run.”

As part of the single’s release, Cyrus filmed a special edition of Endless Summer Vacation: Continued (Backyard Sessions) for ABC that aired on Thursday night in which she talks about her past and the song. The special is now available to stream on Hulu.

“I am grateful to my loyal fans who make my dreams a reality daily,” Cyrus continued in a statement. “I am sincerely thankful for the stability of your steadfast support. This song is for you.”
