Paying tribute to Nightbirde: Mzansi Youth Choir brings Simon Cowell to tears in ‘AGT’ Golden Buzzer moment

In a poignant tribute on the America’s Got Talent (AGT) season premiere, the Mzansi Youth Choir from South Africa honored Nightbirde, also known as Jane Marczewski, by performing her original song “It’s OK.” The emotional rendition moved judge Simon Cowell to tears.

Remembering Nightbirde’s passion for music, Cowell praised the choir’s tribute, stating, “I know how much this would’ve meant to her. Right until the end, she was so passionate about sharing her music.” The live audience passionately chanted for a Golden Buzzer, leading to a historic moment where all four judges and host Terry Crews collectively pressed the Golden Buzzer for the Mzansi Youth Choir.

This special acknowledgment means the choir advances directly to the live shows. Nightbirde, who left the competition due to deteriorating health, had received a Golden Buzzer from Cowell for her performance of the same song two years prior. The Mzansi Youth Choir expressed their inspiration from Nightbirde’s story and her song’s impact, stating, “We just want to continue her legacy, and that’s why we chose the song.” Nightbirde passed away on February 19, 2021, at the age of 31.
