Renowned Afrobeats sensation, Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, recently confronted the swirling controversy surrounding supposed ‘satanic symbolism’ during his performance at London’s 02 Arena.
Addressing the persistent whispers of connections to the illuminati cult and demonic undertones linked to his show, the singer took to X (formerly Twitter) to clarify that the elements in question were purely artistic expressions.
In a social media post, Rema dismissed concerns regarding the alleged satanic imagery, explaining that the provocative mask worn during the show was a reinterpretation of the ancient bronzes representing his Nigerian heritage.
Following his electrifying performance, reminiscent of celebrated artistes like Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Davido, fans began discussing Rema’s entrance. It featured a striking mask and a stationary horse, elements that carried dark visual themes and eerie symbolism.
During his subsequent stage appearance, Rema donned a red and black futuristic military ensemble, arriving on stage astride a large bat with crimson-covered eyes, further sparking controversy.
The artiste, originally from Edo State, shed light on the symbolic significance behind these stage elements. He clarified that the artificial horse was a homage to a Benin artifact, while the mask he wore replicated the renowned Queen Idia mask.
Moreover, the bat that adorned his second appearance paid tribute to the bats that populate the night sky in Edo, adding cultural depth to the spectacle.
In his social media statement, Rema asserted, “RAVAGE UPRISING/ My Ancestors’ bronzes sit in the museum of this very city so I remade mine. Hence, Edo is redefined, the map reshaped, your minds awakened & the mask reborn. Thank you, London!”
Despite the critical acclaim and sold-out success, the concert exceeded its scheduled time, surpassing the curfew by 20 minutes. Consequently, Rema faces hefty fines, with The O2 Arena imposing a reported penalty of £10,000 (Ksh.1.6 million) per minute for the overrun.
Rema’s bold artistic choices and their underlying cultural significance have sparked both admiration and controversy, prompting a dialogue on the intersection of art, symbolism, and individual interpretation within the entertainment sphere.
