Chiefs TE Travis Kelce reveals sage wisdom for Kansas City’s Super Bowl first-timers

Not many teams are more seasoned than the Kansas City Chiefs when playing in the Super Bowl.

The team is appearing in their fourth Super Bowl in the last five seasons. Underscoring just how quickly teams change in the NFL, only five Chiefs players have appeared in the team’s three Super Bowls leading up to their upcoming appearance in Super Bowl LVIII. Those players are Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Chris Jones, James Winchester, and Harrison Butker.

“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime type of thing that I’ve been able to enjoy a few times,” Kelce said.

As one of the several players who have appeared in all four Super Bowls, Kelce has an abundance of experience — experience that he can pass on to others on the squad who don’t have that same wealth of knowledge.

The team has over a dozen players who are in their first year with the team and several who have been on the team in some capacity, but never once played in the Super Bowl. Kelce shared some sage wisdom for all of those players during Friday’s media availability.

“At the end of the day no matter how much hype, no matter how many cameras, it’s still the game of football,” Kelce said. “You know how to play it. You’re one of the best in the world at doing it. Believe that. Feel that confidence and try not to make the moments bigger than they are. If you feel like you’re getting a little nervous, just lean on your brother next to you and we’ll find a way to get through this thing.”

Hopefully, that message is heard by all of the first-timers who might have nerves leading up to the week of media commitments and craziness. If you let the moment get bigger than it is, it’ll outshine you. If you rely on what you know best, which is football, things will be just fine.
