David Beckham burst into tears after a phone call he didn’t expect
Football icon David Beckham has broken down in tears when revealing the phone call he received during his darkest days.
David Beckham teared up after recalling a phone call he received from Sir Alex Ferguson in the darkest days of his football career.
The former Manchester United star became a national villain after his infamous red card for lashing out at Argentina’s Diego Simeone at the 1998 World Cup, The Sun reports.
In his tell-all documentary released this month, Beckham described that period as one of the most difficult in his career and admits he may not have got through it if not for the support from his club.
Former United boss Ferguson played a pivotal role and his support made Beckham tear up when recalling a phone call they had after the World Cup.
“The boss called me, he said ‘David how you doing?’ I think I got quite emotional,” Beckham said in the new documentary.
“He said ‘how you doing son?’, I said ‘Not great boss’. He said ‘okay, don’t worry about it son’.”
Ferguson was interviewed for the docuseries and shared his perspective on the incident.
He said: “I told him go on your holiday, come back here, we’ll look after you. Don’t read the papers, there’s no point to it. What you can do is ignore it.”
While Fergie showed support for Beckham after France ‘98, the documentary also details their famous falling out in 2003.
