Sir Alex Ferguson was not impressed with David Beckham when he began dating Victoria amid fears his focus was moving away from the football pitch

Ferguson was manager of Manchester United when Beckham began dating Spice Girls star Victoria in 1997, as his side continued their domination of English football.

The couple quickly attracted media attention and those close to the situation feared that the England international was taking his eye off the ball, and the extremes he went to to see his partner weren’t always well received.

Teammate Paul Scholes said on a new Netflix documentary about the ex-England captain: “We knew David was p****** the manager off. I think he was probably going down to London at times when he possibly shouldn’t have been. And the manager wouldn’t have that.”

Gary Neville, like Scholes, came through the academy with Beckham and he could see how committed he became to spending time with Victoria as their romance blossomed. He claims Beckham would often try and lie about where he’d been, but the players knew the truth.

He said: “The truth is he was on the phone to Victoria every second. He would stay on the phone until one o’clock in the morning. He was in the bathroom, with the light on all night speaking to her. I was a like what the f*** are you speaking to her about. Come on mate seriously, we are playing Liverpool on Sunday.”

Neville also added: “I knew the lengths he was going to, to see Victoria. It was a lot. It was like an addict. He had to….he would drive four hours to spend 20 minutes with her. He couldn’t kid us. We would say ‘where were you last night?’ ‘Oh I just went for a drive’.”

Beckham’s rise to fame was sharp and he became a global icon whilst playing for United, which caused issues with his manager. Throughout his career the former England captain juggled his hectic lifestyle with consistent performances on the pitch, which always blew Neville’s mind.

“I don’t know how he did it,” he confessed. “David had the ability to have madness in his life potentially, and literally an hour before kick off switch off and switch into football. He would be on it and he would perform. I don’t know how he did it. It would break me.”
