David Letterman defends Taylor Swift against haters: ‘This is such a lovely thing, shut up!’

The former “Late Show” host also jokingly mixed up Swift’s boyfriend, Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, with “Frasier” star Kelsey Grammer.

David Letterman just wants you to say yes to this love story.

In a video posted to Instagram on Sunday, the legendary TV host let his Swiftie flag fly and shared his blunt thoughts on NFL fans upset about the amount of attention Taylor Swift receives when she attends Kansas City Chiefs games to support her boyfriend, star tight end Travis Kelce.

“I don’t think in the history of show business or the history of popular culture we’ve ever witnessed anything like this,” Letterman says of Swift in the video. “Tremendous! She fills stadiums around the world and puts on a three-hour show. We live in a world now where all we hear is nonsense and ugliness. The nonsense can’t be more nonsensical, and the ugliness — God hopes it can’t get any uglier. But that’s all we hear. So now here’s Taylor Swift, who is a glowing bright light of goodness in the world, and she starts dating Kelsey Grammer.”

At this point, Late Show With David Letterman producer Barbara Gaines can be heard butting in to point out Letterman’s name mixup. “No, that’s not true,” she tells him. (Grammer is of course the guy from Cheers and Frasier, not a football player.)

Pretending not to recognize his mistake, Letterman continues the bit, saying, “The [Kelce] people say, ‘Oh, no, no, no, don’t bother us. We’re all caught up in football. We don’t want Taylor and football.’ And the Taylor Swift people, the Swifties, are saying, ‘Oh, we don’t want a footballer in here with [Swift].’ And I say to both camps, ‘This is such a lovely thing. Shut up!'”

Letterman concludes that “It’s good for the footballers. It’s good for Taylor Swift, and it’s something positive and happy for the world. And also politically, Taylor Swift is a huge force, and I think just wants to see people do the right thing. So God bless Taylor Swift and [Kelce].”

The post came the same day the Chiefs beat the Baltimore Ravens, paving the way for them to play against the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl on Feb. 11.
