Emma Stone regrets making Taylor Swift joke at Golden Globes after the response

Emma Stone poked fun at her longtime pal Taylor Swift while being interviewed after winning the award for Best Film Actress in a Comedy or Musical for Poor Things at the Golden Globes last month

Emma Stone says she regrets making a rude joke about her close friend Taylor Swift at the Golden Globes after a harsh backlash from the singer’s fans.

The 35-year-old was being interviewed backstage after winning the award for Best Film Actress in a Comedy or Musical for Poor Things at the Hollywood ceremony last month, and tried to crack a joke after being asked a pointless question by a reporter. “I don’t know if you noticed but when you won, Taylor Swift gave you a huge round of applause. You know, what are your thoughts on her cheering your win?” they asked, prompting Emma to fire back a sarcastic reply.

“What an a**hole, am I right?” she quipped, as the other journalists laughed. “I’ve known her for almost 20 years, so I’m very happy she was there. She was also nominated tonight, so I’m very happy she was there, but what an a**hole. After facing a fierce backlash from Swifties, Oscar winner Emma admitted she regretted making the joke, but insisted it was taken “out of context”, and Taylor was not offended by her quick-witted comment. “I definitely won’t make a joke like that again. Because I saw headlines that really pulled it out of context,” she explained to Variety.

“What a dope,” Emma laughed, pointing to herself. When she won the award for Best Actress at the Golden Globes in January, Taylor was seen giving her pal a standing ovation and clapping wildly. The actress has been friends with the Cruel Summer hitmaker since 2008, when they first met at the Young Hollywood Awards. While they’ve kept quiet about their friendship over the years, they have been spotted supporting one another, with Emma seen at Taylor’s Eras Tour gig in Los Angeles last year, and the pop icon at the New York premiere of Poor Things in December.

Back in 2010, she told MTV News their friendship had developed after Emma sent Taylor an email praising her music. “I listened to some of her music, and I wrote her an e-mail saying I liked her music, I swear. And then we started talking and hanging out,” she revealed.

The Easy A star once revealed she had blagged tickets for her sold-out Eras Tour thanks to her close friendship with the Grammy-winning singer, and heaped praise on the Shake It Off hitmaker. “I was lucky ’cause we’ve been friends for a really long time. I’ve known her since we were 17 and 18, so she hooked me up, which was very nice ’cause I know those tickets are impossible to get. She’s a wonderful friend. She blows my mind,” she told Vanity Fair in June.

Last year, when Taylor released Speak Now (Taylor’s Version), fans speculated the vault track When Emma Falls in Love was about the La La Land star’s previous relationship with Kieran Culkin, who she dated from 2010 to 2011. While the singer has yet to confirm who she wrote the song about, she did confirm during one of her Eras Tour dates she wrote it about one of her “best friends”.
