Dallas Mavericks’ superstar Luka Doncic feels like one of the NBA’s ultimate untouchable players, and for obvious reasons.

He’s been one of the game’s most prolific scorers since his 2018-19 rookie season, and Doncic is only 24 years of age. The Mavericks have emerged as a playoff contender again since his arrival, and there’d be no simple way of replacing a man of his talents.

In Aug. 2021, Doncic agreed to a massive five-year contract extension worth $207 million. But what happens if Doncic wants out, and what if the Mavs are forced to deal him down the road? There’d be absolutely no shortage of interested teams.

At NBA Analysis Network, James Piercey proposed a massive blockbuster trade idea that would see the New York Knicks land Doncic for a king’s ransom: Young star R.J. Barrett, center Mitchell Robinson, 2024, 2025, 2026, 2027, 2028, 2029 and 2030 first-round picks. The 2027 and 2029 firsts would be swaps in Piercey’s proposal:

“The Mavericks were struggling before they acquired Kyrie Irving. They’ve struggled since acquiring Kyrie Irving. Let’s be honest – this isn’t going well. That’s not to say the Mavericks should trade Doncic this summer. Let’s be clear – they should not. Unless, of course, he requests a trade.

In that event, the Mavs may not have a choice. If they don’t, this is a good trade. They’re receiving two quality young players, five first-round picks, and two swaps.”

There is no firm indicator that the Mavericks want to trade Doncic. But we’re in an era where most superstars on a non-championship contender pop up in trade rumors. If the Mavericks aren’t consistently competing for championships over the next couple of years, they may have no choice but to shop Doncic down the road.

The Knicks haven’t had a bonafide big-named franchise star in their prime since Carmelo Anthony. Landing Doncic would bring this organization its highest level of buzz since the club’s run to the 1999 NBA Finals.

Trading for Doncic makes total sense for almost any team. But for now, he remains a member of the Mavericks.
