Jason Momoa cringed when he was told that he was playing Aquaman.

Without a doubt, the role of Aquaman / Arthur Curry made actor Jason Momoa a household name around the world, however, the actor initially cringed when he found out he was playing the character. Even though Momoa thought that the character was silly, 2018’s Aquaman went on to become the highest-grossing film based on a DC Comics character with a box office collection of roughly $1.152 billion.

In a past interview, the actor explained that he went after Ben Affleck’s audition and thought that he would play Lobo in the DCEU. However, he was told that Lobo does not exist in that universe and was told he would play Aquaman.

In December, actor Jason Momoa appeared for an interview with Fandango with fellow actor Patrick Wilson to talk about 2023’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. During the conversation, Momoa recalled his audition for the role of Aquaman / Arthur Curry. The actor explained that he thought he was auditioning for Lobo but to his surprise, he was offered the role of Aquaman,

“Well, I originally thought I was going to be playing Lobo in the very beginning – I auditioned for Batman and I almost didn’t do it because I was like, ‘This is silly, it’s not going to be me.’ I get called in right after Ben Affleck gets announced and I’m like, ‘Oh f**k, of course I am gonna play the bad guy.’”

The actor was sure that he would get the role of Lobo in the DCEU because he has always publicly stated that he loves the character but he was offered Aquaman instead,

“I got called in the office and it was just like, ‘Well do you know who you’re gonna play?’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, Lobo of course, he’s the only one that can fight Batman and Superman.’ He’s like, ‘What Lobo? No, he’s not in this universe.’ I was like, ‘What? Who the hell am I supposed to play?’ It’s funny and man, I wish he would have taped it because he was like, ‘Aquaman,’ I’m like, ‘The f**k are you talking about?”

Jason Momoa explained that he physically cringed when he heard Aquaman but 2018’s Aquaman went on to make more than $1.1 billion at the global box office, becoming the highest-grossing DC film of all time.

In the interview, Momoa confirmed that his journey as Aquaman has officially ended but in the past, the actor has hinted that DC will always have a place for him. The actor explained that he will definitely play Lobo in James Gunn’s DCU if he gets the call,

“So, Lobo… I used to collect comics and I don’t do so much anymore, but he was always my favorite. And I’ve always wanted to play Lobo because I’m like, ‘Hello?’ It’s pretty perfect. It’s the perfect role. I mean, listen, if they call me and ask me to play it? It’s a f**k yeah. But, I mean, that’s a guarantee. So, you don’t have to worry about that. But, I haven’t received that call. So, I don’t want to put any fake news out there but if they ever call me and ask me to play, or ask me to audition, I’m there.”

Momoa is indeed perfect for the role and especially with James Gunn soft rebooting the franchise, there is a possibility that Momoa’s gets the opportunity to play Lobo in this new DCU.
