Rashee Rice’s Reported Sanction Set to Exceed NFL’s Suspension of Ezekiel Elliott, DeAndre Hopkins and Tom Brady Per Reports

The Kansas City Chiefs are reportedly bracing for a potentially major suspension for their young star wide receiver Rashee Rice. According to NFL.com’s James Palmer, the Chiefs expect Rice “to be suspended for at least half of the regular season” stemming from his role in a high-speed car crash on March 30th.
Palmer stated emphatically on Steve Smith’s Agent 89 Breakdown Show, “Not only will Rice be suspended, but Kansas City believes it’ll be that significant.” This suspension could eclipse some of the highest-profile player disciplinary cases in recent NFL history.
Rice is facing eight charges related to the multi-vehicle accident, including multiple felonies for speeding and unsafe driving. He was arrested and jailed briefly, with at least two accident victims filing civil lawsuits against him. The NFL is clearly taking the incident seriously, with Palmer’s report indicating the length of Rice’s expected suspension.
“There is a long way to go in this process,” Palmer said. “Both Roger Goodell and Clark Hunt have indicated they’re letting the legal process play out before handing out respective punishments.” However, it appears the league has already begun preparations for Rice to miss a substantial portion of the 2024 campaign.
Considering past suspensions, this potential ban for Rice would exceed the penalties given to Hopkins (6 games) for potential doping violations and Ezekiel Elliott (6 games) for domestic violence claims. It would also surpass Brady’s 4-game Deflategate suspension, a landmark ruling.
The franchise revamped its receiver corps in the offseason, acquiring Marquise Brown and drafting Xavier Worthy in the first round. Palmer notes these moves “could have been influenced by the potential of a Rice suspension,” though he acknowledges the absence of direct evidence substantiating this speculation.
Examining the NFL’s disciplinary patterns
Looking at the league’s history of player discipline provides context around the potential severity of Rice’s looming suspension. Suspensions of 10+ games have typically been reserved for the most egregious off-field incidents and repeat offenders.
Vontaze Burfict received the longest-ever on-field suspension at 12 games in 2019 for his history of dangerous plays violating safety policies. Josh Gordon has been suspended 6 times for violating substance abuse policies, including the entire 2015 season.
Calvin Ridley sat out the entire 2022 season for wagering on NFL matches. Michael Vick’s indefinite ban for his involvement in a dogfighting ring demonstrate the league’s willingness to make players examples. However, aside from Ridley, true season-long suspensions have been relatively uncommon for single offenses during Goodell’s tenure as commissioner.
Cases like Vick and Burfict had compounding factors that seemingly increased the discipline. If the reports are accurate, Rice could face an unprecedented punishment for a first-time offense based solely on the incident’s dangerous nature. Such a severe suspension would reflect the NFL’s evolving disciplinary approach and send a strong message about conduct detrimental to public safety.
