Country music legend’s family breaks silence after Emmy Russell’s ‘American Idol’ performance. ttmd

There might not have been a dry eye in the house Monday when Emmy Russel finished singing on “American Idol.”

It wasn’t just a song that she performed.

The 24-year-old stepped out on that stage and sang, “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” the hit made famous by her late country music legend grandmother, Loretta Lynn.

Russell was brilliant, and it showed on the faces of the “Idol” contestants who watched, the crowd and the judges.

Among those in the crowd was her mother, Patsy Russell, who could be seen shedding tears.

And later that night, Patsy shared a photo on social media of her and Emmy asleep side-by-side and wrote, “So proud of my baby girl.”

She wasn’t the only famous family member heaping praise on Emmy for the performance.

“Emmy Russell you made your grandmother proud singing ‘Coal Miners Daughter last night on ‘American Idol,’” Lynn’s sister, singer Crystal Gale, wrote on social media. “You were wonderful!!!”

Russell’s evolution — she has worked to be more outgoing and confident in her performances — has been a major storyline during this show’s season. The performance seemed to be a key moment in that.

When she was through, Russell guessed that it was judge Katy Perry who made that song an option — the judge’s each pitched a song for each contestant to choose from — and she was right.

“I choose this song not because Loretta Lynn is your grandma,” Perry said, her voice cracking. “I choose this song because you are Emmy Russell, and you can do anything now as Emmy Russell.”

It was a moment for Russell, too, who has often freely expressed her emotions.

In the lead up to the song, she also shed a few tears, but she was determined heading out to perform.

“I’m Emmy Russell,” she said. “I’m 24-years-old, and I’m proud to be a coal miner’s great granddaughter.”

It was a performance that also helped Russell survive another round of cutdowns and advance on to the top seven in the contest.
