Cowboys and Chiefs as Dallas teams? Mayor Eric Johnson pushes for Mahomes’ team to return to city
Could Dallas become home to two NFL powerhouses?
Everything is bigger in Texas, they say. But could the Lone Star State really handle two professional football teams in one of its marquee cities? Dallas mayor Eric Johnson seems to think so.
The Kansas City Chiefs are currently in a bit of a pickle after a sales tax proposal in Jackson County, Missouri, was rejected by voters. This tax was intended to fund extensive renovations at Arrowhead Stadium, as well as the construction of a new downtown stadium for the MLB’s Royals. With this setback, the Chiefs and Royals are now exploring other options for financial assistance.
Mayor Johnson has been vocal in his support for the Chiefs to return to Dallas, the city where the franchise was originally founded in 1960 before making the move to Kansas City in 1963. “Dallas was named the top sports city in the United States because we play to win,” Johnson expressed to The Dallas Morning News. “Our market is big enough, growing enough, and loves football more than enough to support a second NFL team — especially a franchise (and an owner) with deep roots here.”
While the idea of the Chiefs relocating to Dallas may currently be a far-fetched notion, there are some compelling reasons to consider it. First and foremost, Texas is undeniably football-crazed, and Dallas, in particular, has a fervent passion for the sport. Additionally, the city already has an available stadium in the form of the historic Cotton Bowl, which hosted the Dallas Texans (the predecessor of the Kansas City Chiefs) in the early 1960s.
Chiefs’ potential return to Dallas rattles Jerry Jones
It’s worth pondering how Jerry Jones, the owner of the Dallas Cowboys, feels about potentially sharing a city with the two-time defending Super Bowl champions. It’s safe to assume that Jones will not shy away from expressing his thoughts on the matter if this possibility were to materialize in the future.
If anything, the arrival of the Chiefs would undoubtedly intensify the pressure on Jones and the Cowboys to deliver a winning team. The Chiefs are currently striving to achieve an unprecedented feat in NFL history by clinching a third consecutive Super Bowl victory, adding an extra layer of competition within the city.
In summary, Mayor Johnson’s public backing of the Chiefs’ potential return to Dallas has sparked intriguing discussions about the feasibility and implications of having two NFL teams in one city. Only time will tell if this ambitious idea will come to fruition, but for now, it has certainly stirred up excitement and speculation within the football community.
