‘Meme of the year’: Tiger Woods moment steals the Masters limelight

Tiger Woods Vows to 'Keep the Motor Going' After 2024 Masters

Tiger Woods endured a nightmare around the famous Augusta National golf course at The Masters, but the golfing icon still provided a viral moment.

The 48-year-old saw his hopes of capturing a sixth green jacket go up in flames during the third round after carding the worst nine holes of his career in 99 rounds at Augusta.

Despite finishing dead last out of the 60 players who made the cut at 16-over, Woods stole the show with fans over a hilarious moment captured during his final round.

The five-time Masters winner

Broadcaster Verne Lundquist was one of many who kept a close eye on the megastar with Woods approaching him and shaking hands with the master of the microphone.

But it was the camera angle of the moment that elevated it into legendary status as it appeared the American was shaking hands with a tree.

One user wrote: “That’s going to be the meme of the year.”

A second wrote: “Tiger Woods shaking the hand of his favourite tree at Augusta. Nothing but class.”

A third added: “Tiger Woods shaking hands with a tree is my new all time favourite Masters moment.”

A fourth added: “End of an era: Tiger Woods shakes hands with a tree.”

Lundquist is hanging up his mic after a mutual decision was made for 2024 to be his last Masters.

Incredibly, this is his fortieth time working at Augusta.

Before his final weekend, he revealed his two favourite calls over the years.

One of those was Tiger’s iconic chip on hole No. 16 in 2005 and the other, Jack Nicklaus’ putt in 1986.
