Simone Biles reveals emotional meltdown after husband Jonathan Owens said he didn’t know who she was

Simone Biles says that the backlash her husband received after he claimed he didn’t know who she was left the Olympic champion in a mental breakdown and floods of tears as the NFL star suffered waves of abuse.

Jonathan Owens, who operates as a safety for the Chicago Bears, made the comments in a viral interview in late 2023 during which he said that prior to meeting her, he didn’t know who the greatest gymnast of all time was.

The comment itself is not unreasonable considering that only 16.8m people out of 350,000,000 Americans watched her compete at the Tokyo Olympic games in 2021. That means that approximately 95.2% of Americans never tuned into the event. By contrast, the Super Bowl in 2023 saw 115m viewers.

Nonetheless, those who love the sport went in hard on the 28-year-old and it had a big impact on Biles who felt highly empathetic to the comments being made about her husband, who she married in April 2023.

He also suggested he was the catch of the relationship, and that the man always is, and that’s something that Biles actually agrees with as she defended his name publicly once again.

“He said he was a catch,” Biles declared on the Call Her Daddy podcast. “Because he is! I’ve never met a man like him. I thought it was hilarious at first and then it hurt my feelings.

“One night I broke down and I’m like, ‘Why are you guys talking about my husband like this? You don’t know him. You don’t know who he is and if anybody’s met him, you know he’s the sweetest guy, will do anything for anybody.'”

Owens applies for a passport for the first time ever

As anyone who has ever boarded an international flight will tell you, a passport is required to get through the gates and probably a visa for entry too. That is something Owens has learned recently as he bids to support Biles at the 2024 Olympic Games.

The event will be hosted in Paris meaning that it isn’t quite the same as hopping onto an American Airlines flight to shuttle between Chicago and Houston, Texas and Biles has been trying to show him the passport ropes in time for the summer.

“I mean, in Paris I think they will do a beautiful job and he doesn’t travel overseas too much,” Biles added. “He had to get a passport – he never had a passport before.

“I’m excited for him to see the Olympics because football’s not in the Olympics and he always says it’s the hardest sport, it’s universal. So, why is it not in the Olympics?”
