Given Henry’s ties to Dallas, where he spends his offseasons and even owns a home, the notion didn’t seem far-fetched, especially considering the Cowboys’ recent partings with RBs Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard.

Henry himself entertained the idea, as he shared on The Pivot Podcast. He expressed surprise that the Cowboys didn’t reach out to him, despite what seemed like a natural fit. So, whose fault was it that the Cowboys passed up on this golden opportunity?

Owner Jerry Jones blamed for Derrick Henry blunder

Jerry Jones had declared an “all-in” approach for the 2024 season, emphasizing a shift from long-term building to focusing on immediate success. This stance came amidst the Cowboys’ grappling with salary cap constraints, which could have influenced their decision not to pursue Derrick Henry, despite the speculation and Henry’s connections to Dallas.

Despite the ongoing rumors, as per Henry himself, “They ain’t holla at me at all”. “It would’ve been crazy,” Henry remarked, imagining what could have been if he had donned the Cowboys’ jersey. He further added, “I thought it’d been some type of reach out, some type of talks or whatever. They never reached out, you know what I’m saying?”

Owing to this, Substack columnist and former MMA fighter Malcolm Flex, who has over 155K followers on X, did not mince words when targeting Jones. He took to X to say, “Jerry Jones needs to fire himself.” This comes amidst other missteps by Jones as, despite the Cowboys being in dire need of a veteran RB, they passed up on names like Saquon Barkley, Aaron Jones, Josh Jacobs, D’Andre Swift, and Austin Ekeler.

Jerry Jones was the target of other opinions by concerned fans who could not watch their franchise making such big blunders.

Is Jones the biggest problem of the Cowboys?

As per a fan, this move was a ‘missed opportunity’ for the Cowboys, since Henry himself thought that Dallas would be perfect for him.

@nickkthecreator0 took to X to say, “Jerry Jones is seriously washed. The cowboys are an unserious franchise. I feel terrible for their fans, honestly.” Though the user is not a Cowboys fan, even they could see the huge mistake Jones had made by not even making an attempt to try to woo Henry to Dallas.

@ProSportsguy21 took a dig at the owner and said that he was too “busy taking naps and practicing his doodles to actually do anything”. Although there is still time for free agency to end, if Jones is not proactive, he could very well end up not filling the RB gap.

Mike said that the team should consider resigning Ezekiel Elliott. The team had parted ways with the RB in 2022, despite being together since 2016. He is currently languishing in free agency as the Patriots have not extended his contract.

@jamjks said that maybe the Cowboys will use their 24th pick in Round 1 to draft an RB.

However, @Alexjakes8 wasn’t so sure that the squad’s fortunes were going to turn around anytime soon. The Cowboys had last won the Super Bowl in 1995, and according to him, Jones’ “stubbornness” would cost the Cowboys big time.
