Merril Hoge is issuing a stern caution to NFL decision-makers as the 2024 NFL Draft approaches, particularly those with high draft picks: selecting Drake Maye could spell trouble, potentially even costing jobs.

Maye is anticipated to be chosen within the top three picks, with strong possibilities of landing with the Commanders at No. 2 or the Patriots shortly after.

Hoge, speaking on WCCO radio, emphasized the risk associated with drafting Maye at such a high position, suggesting that doing so could lead to career consequences.

The draft order is expected to see USC’s Caleb Williams taken first, followed by Maye and LSU’s Jayden Daniels at No. 2 and No. 3, although the order of selection remains uncertain.

Hoge drew a comparison between Maye and Titans quarterback Malik Willis, a third-round pick in 2022 who currently sits behind Will Levis on Tennessee’s depth chart.

“Willis might be the only comparable case of erratic play to Maye,” remarked Hoge, a former ESPN analyst and NFL running back for the Steelers and Bears.

Why is Hoge so critical of Maye?

Hoge’s critique of Maye stems from extensive analysis, having closely studied Maye‘s performances over the past two years.

Notably, Maye‘s final game against North Carolina State was described by Hoge as “embarrassing,” particularly for a player expected to excel as an elite franchise quarterback, citing erratic and inconsistent play.

During the 2023 season, Maye posted respectable stats with 3,608 passing yards, 24 touchdowns, and nine interceptions.

However, this represented a decline compared to his 2022 performance, where Maye excelled with 4,321 yards, 38 touchdowns, and seven interceptions, leading North Carolina to an ACC Championship game appearance.

Despite his statistical achievements, North Carolina‘s seasons in both 2022 and 2023 ended disappointingly, with Maye and the team stumbling towards the end.

Maye‘s interactions with NFL teams have been noteworthy, reportedly meeting with the Patriots, who hold the No. 3 pick, on multiple occasions. He also engaged with the Washington Commanders ahead of his UNC pro day.

The first round of the NFL Draft is scheduled for April 25, and Maye‘s anticipated high draft position continues to draw scrutiny and speculation as teams weigh the potential risks and rewards of selecting him.
