When you’re one of the greatest stars of America’s most popular sport, you are bound to attract attention.
And Patrick Mahomes often finds himself garnering negative attention with no fault of his own. When the team does not perform well or loses games, fans are quick to point fingers at players. Some of them even take drastic steps to make this known.
On a podcast, Randi Mahomes shared how fans can sometimes go too far. And their fervor for the team could turn into security and privacy concerns for the families of the players.
Randi Mahomes talks about fans stalking her family
Randi Mahomes opened up about the extreme and sometimes terrifying behavior she has encountered from fans. Speaking candidly on the I Got It From My Momma Podcast, she said, “During the playoff times, fans get really excited, and we’ve had some mean fans and nice fans. Some that have made death threats and different things that have gotten really extreme and scary.”
Randi recounted unsettling instances of strangers loitering near her residence. With some even going as far as to take photographs or approach her home under the guise of fandom. These actions, she noted, were not only invasive but also made Randi afraid. Thankfully, her neighbors always had her back. “My neighbors are wonderful. They watch out for me, they watch my house constantly.”
But what Randi Mahomes faced is far from unusual. Football fans have often gone too far in their passion and devotion to their quads.
Times when fans went too far
In two separate instances, NFL fandom took a regrettable turn. In January 2022, as the Chiefs faced off against the Denver Broncos, an incident on the sidelines captured unwelcome attention. Jackson Mahomes, the TikTok star, found himself the target of a heckler. Amidst creating content with Brittany Mahomes, Patrick’s fiancée, a Broncos fan, hurled an anti-LGBTQ slur at Jackson. Jackson retorted, “That’s rude.” It was, however, met with the repetition of the slur.
Going back to August 2021, a preseason game between the Rams and Chargers at SoFi Stadium spiraled into chaos. An altercation, ignited by verbal spats between fans, escalated dramatically when a drink was hurled. An all-out fistfight broke out. A man in an Aaron Donald Rams jersey ended up with a significant eye injury. The chaos expanded, with more spectators joining the fray, leading to several bans from SoFi Stadium, as reported by USA Today.
These incidents serve as reminders of the thin line where the line between enthusiasm and extremism can sometimes become dangerously blurred. This also further enhances the problems that players’ families face, as put forth by Randi Mahomes.
