Andrew Wiggins has been the subject of much scrutiny for his absences during essential periods for the team.
Last season, he had taken a leave that extended for over two months for personal reasons. It was later revealed to be due to his father’s serious medical condition. This season too, Wiggs had to take a leave of absence that ended up in him missing four games for the Warriors.
The reason for his absence has yet to be divulged, but it seems like Wiggins is trying his best to keep his head in the game. Despite a dismal start to the season, the Canadian veteran has been playing like his championship self of late. And Coach Kerr couldn’t be more happy about the fact.
Knowing what he is capable of, Steve Kerr opened up about his expectations for Andrew Wiggins during his chat with Willard and Dibs in 95.7 The Game. “We want Andrew to be more aggressive,” Kerr iterated. “I think the more aggressive he is looking for a shot, the better… I think sometimes Andrew gets lost in the shuffle… so I think I’ve got to do a better job of keeping him engaged and really get him in positions to attack and to be successful.”
The NBA champion’s 12.6 points per game does not scream brilliance, and he’s played in 58 games already. Wiggins had much better numbers in fewer games throughout his career. The 2019-20 season saw him play 54 games while averaging 21.8 points. In the 2022-23 season, despite playing just 37 games, he had an average of 17.1 points.
Be that as it may, the All-Star player has shown significant improvement, considering how his season started. In the last 15 games Wiggs has played, he’s averaging 13.0 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 2.1 assists while shooting 47.4% from the field and an impressive 42.9% from downtown. He was a dreary 25.0% from the three-point line in the first 15 games of the season.
Though challenges continue to persist in the family for Wiggins, the 2014 No. 1 pick is determined not to fail his team. Kerr’s hopes for him thus carry greater clarity. For, Wiggins’ aggression and engagement will prove essential as he treads through the “personal problems” that grow serious.
Andrew Wiggins’ brother’s update carries uncertainty
Nick Wiggins, the older brother of Andrew Wiggins, in a shocking revelation, posted that he would be cutting his season short. The older Wiggins is currently playing for the Pacific Caesar Surabaya in Indonesia which he had inked in January 2024. In a heartfelt Instagram post, Nick cited the reason as problems at home. “Due to some serious personal issues back home, I had to cut the season short & head back.”
He further thanked his teammates and fans for their unwavering support during the trying time he had to go through. Wiggins also iterated how challenging situations and tougher decisions were intrinsic to life. Though the reasons remain unclear, Nick’s journey cut short highlights the seriousness and the unkind uncertainty it may entail. While he makes his way home, one only hopes for no escalation to watch the Dubs’ No. 22 hopping on the next flight.
