The NFL is nearing a conclusion in its investigations into alleged tampering by the Atlanta Falcons and Philadelphia Eagles, with potential draft pick penalties looming for both teams.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the Falcons could face more severe punishment if found guilty of tampering with quarterback Kirk Cousins before signing him this offseason. The disciplinary action, likely to involve draft picks, is expected to be more significant for the FalconsSchefter emphasized.

According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, the NFL’s investigation into the Falcons was comprehensive, focusing on whether Cousins provided the team with medical information before the legal tampering period or had impermissible contact with team officials.

Cousins, who recently signed with the Falcons, acknowledged speaking with Atlanta’s head athletic trainer before the league year began. This move could be seen as an attempt by the Falcons to gather medical information about Cousins, who is recovering from a torn Achilles. However, if it violates league rules, it could lead to serious consequences for the team.

The Eagles also face possible punishment

Meanwhile, the Eagles are accused of violating tampering rules in their pursuit of running back Saquon BarkleyPenn State coach James Franklin claimed that Eagles general manager Howie Roseman spoke to Barkley before the league year started, an allegation both the Eagles and Barkley deny, stating that Roseman only spoke to Barkley’s agent.

Tampering violations in the NFL are rare but can result in harsh penalties, as seen in the Miami Dolphins’ case. The Dolphins were stripped of a first-round pick in 2023 and a third-round pick in 2024 for tampering with Tom Brady and Sean Payton over several years. While the situations differ, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Falcons and Eagles face significant draft pick losses if found guilty.
