Celebrities today use social media to share snippets of their personal lives and their parenting adventures. But Scarlett Johansson is one of the few famous people who choose to stay away from all the online fanfare. In recent interviews, the actress shared a rare comment about her motherhood journey, and she also explained why she prefers to stay away from social media.

Johansson described motherhood as an emotionally draining relationship.

The actress has 2 kids — 8-year-old Rose, her child with her ex-husband Romain Dauriac, and her youngest Cosmo, whom she shares with husband Colin Jost. She didn’t hold back when she recalled the challenges of being a mom to Rose when she was just a toddler.

Johansson said that toddlers go through waves of emotions and make lots of demands. She felt that the whole experience was emotionally draining. “It’s crazy, very intense emotional swings and so bossy and adamant. You’re up and down constantly.”

There are almost no public photos of Johansson’s kids because she stays away from social media.

The Black Widow actress believes that she is too sensitive for the harsh online environment, and she worries about how social media could negatively affect her mental health. “I honestly am too fragile of a person to have social media. My ego is too fragile. I can’t deal with it,” she said in a podcast interview.

“I’m like a delicate flower. I have enough anxiety,” she added. And Johansson’s reason is a pretty relatable one. There are other celebrities who have also decided to shun or quit social media to avoid anxiety and to protect their privacy. Some famous parents also guard their kids closely to keep them away from these online platforms.

She tried to use social media once, and did not like the effect it had on her.

One of the things that affirmed Johansson’s decision to refrain from going down the social media rabbit hole was her short brush with these networking apps. She does not have a profile of her own, but she used her skincare brand’s Instagram and TikTok accounts.

“I then become like a 3-year-old with their mom’s phone where I get completely absorbed into it. So that’s why I know I can’t have it,” she candidly shared. “I started realizing that I’d spent 20 minutes looking at somebody’s Instagram page, someone who worked for a friend of mine. I now know you have a pit bull and 2 daughters, and you live in like Burbank.”

Her captivation with someone else’s life left a bad taste in her mouth — “I was like, what? I just wasted 17 minutes of time. I now feel like I should move to California, get this specific dog, and change my life in all these ways that felt so bad.”

Johansson says she already receives enough attention in real life.

The 2-time world’s highest-paid actress may not have a public profile, but that does not shield her from receiving a lot of attention — the good and the bad kind. “I mean, it’s part of the gig, I guess,” she explained. “If people are being respectful, it’s fine. But if someone is being rude and obnoxious, then yeah. That would irritate anybody.”
