Wingard says the live-action adaptation of the beloved ’80s animated series Thundercats is currently making progress in the scripting stage.

Godzilla vs. Kong director even hinted that Thundercats could be his next project that comes to life. In a recent interview, Wingard revealed that a previous draft of the Thundercats script had been completed.

However, the progress was temporarily halted due to Wingard’s upcoming project Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Now, Wingard has reignited excitement by confirming that the Thundercats script is once again actively being nurtured.

Adam Wingard told io9 (via Gizmodo),

“Simon [Barrett] and I are still actively working on the script. We finished our last draft basically right when I was going into production on this movie and we just had to put everything on hold. [But] right now we’re actively working on it again. So whether that means that’s the next thing I do or [not], I’m not sure. But it’s definitely one of the top priorities I have right now in terms of working on a script.”

The live-action Thundercats adaptation was initially announced by Warner Bros. in March 2021. Now with each passing update from Wingard’s mouth, the anticipation for Thundercats grows more palpable.  Fans are eagerly awaiting the opportunity to witness their childhood heroes brought to life in stunning live-action.

His love for the show dates back to his childhood, and he has actively taken the opportunity to bring Thundercats to the big screen since it became available at Warner Bros. Wingard even proudly asserts that his understanding and passion for Thundercats surpass that of anyone else on the planet.

Adam Wingard told Deadline,

“I heard there was a Thundercats script out there and it happened to be set up with some of my producers on Death Note. I asked them, I want to rewrite this script with my friend Simon Barrett. This is a huge passion thing for me. Nobody on this planet knows or has thought as much about Thundercats as I have. They gave me the reins. I saw this as an opportunity to do a new type of fantasy sci-fi spectacle film that people have never seen before. It’s got a rich mythology; the characters are fantastic.”

The upcoming film promises to be a grand-scale production, drawing inspiration from the animated TV series Thundercats that aired from 1985 to 1989. Initially developed by the Death Note producers Dan Lin of Rideback and Roy Lee of Vertigo, the project had an early script penned by David Coggeshall. However, later, Wingard was assigned to develop the screenplay, collaborating with Simon Barrett to reshape the narrative.
