There are plenty of questions surrounding the future of the Golden State Warriors. The core trio that brought them four championships isn’t as springy as they used to be, and one of them is probably already one foot out the door.
However, the Dubs still have a brighter future than most franchises facing similar situations. Thanks to one Jonathan Kuminga, Dub Nation doesn’t have to worry as much about the team’s long-term future. His impressive performance over the season has safely secured his spot on the roster for the coming years.
It’s clear to everyone in the league that it’s in their best interests to keep him tied down to the Bay for as long as humanly possible. The question now lies in whether the franchise is financially willing to pay what experts believe to be one of the top young players in the NBA.
Analysts think the Golden State Warriors must be ready to pay up to $30 million for Jonathan Kuminga
The Ringer’s Jordan Murdock published an in-depth piece on what’s next for the Golden State Warriors after their elimination from the play-in tournament. It discussed the possible futures of players like Klay Thompson, Draymond Green, and Chris Paul.
However, his tidbit about Jonathan Kuminga will have fans both excited and worried at the same time:
The Warriors brass has valued Kuminga highly in recent years, but extension negotiations will be telling, as his public complaints about his playing time earlier this season suggest that he and the Warriors may not see eye to eye about his role. Some analysts believe Kuminga could fetch more than $30 million per year on the open market, a figure that would make him the second-highest-paid player on Golden State’s roster.
Kuminga’s minutes have increased significantly since he was drafted seventh overall in the 2021 NBA Draft. Last season, he averaged an impressive 16.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.2 assists on 52.9% shooting and 32.1% from distance.
His main complaints about playing time might be sorted if the Warriors decide to be pragmatic and let Klay Thompson find another team to rebuild his confidence. Should Thompson be the one sacrificed for the sake of Kuminga’s contract, Andrew Wiggins might have to slide to the two and have Kuminga take his place.
Draymond Green’s position is also a possible fit for Kuminga. While he doesn’t have the court vision Kuminga provides, his athleticism allows him to be more effective on both ends of the floor. Moreover, Green doesn’t have the best opinion out of the core Warriors stars among people within the organization.
It will be a tough balancing act, but the Dubs should prioritize keeping Jonathan Kuminga happy and committed to the Warriors. While he did mention that he wanted to be a Warrior for life, the Warriors must do their part and give him a contract good enough to make those words more than mere lip service.
