Luffy’s quest to become the Pirate King encounters unexpected obstacles, orchestrated by none other than the creator himself, Eiichiro Oda. Find out why Luffy, despite his insurmountable strength, sometimes has to slow down.

Luffy’s journey from the weakest seas to becoming one of the strongest pirates highlights his incredible growth and determination. As Yonko, Luffy possesses insurmountable strength, thanks to his powerful Devil Fruit power and advanced forms of Haki . Oda often limits Luffy’s power to create obstacles and maintain tension in the story, emphasizing how powerful and unstoppable Luffy has become.

Luffy has achieved some of the most impressive feats with his Devil Fruit in One Piece. Although the beginning of his journey as a pirate was rather humble , he has now become one of the strongest pirates on the seas. In fact, Luffy is so strong that Oda often has to create obstacles for him in order to extend arcs, something he’s talked about a lot recently.

Luffy, from his debut in Yonko

Luffy is one of the most prodigious pirates to ever sail the seas of the One Piece world. He began his journey to becoming a pirate at age 17, from the weakest of the four seas, East Blue. It didn’t take long for Luffy to make a big name for himself. In fact, in a short time, Luffy became the most dangerous man in the East, with a very high bounty of 30 million berries.

In this short time, he has defeated capable individuals, such as Alvida, Captain Kuro, Don Krieg, and of course, Arlong, who was a seasoned pirate of the Grand Line. These individuals stood absolutely no chance against him in battle and it was clear to fans that Luffy was ready for the next step.

Luffy’s current strength

As Yonko, Luffy possesses insurmountable strength. He is a pirate that few can take on in combat and this is due to the fact that he has access to an incredibly overpowered Devil Fruit ability. While this Devil Fruit wasn’t that special at first , Luffy managed to learn every aspect of it and eventually awakened it. It is the awakening of this Devil Fruit that gives Luffy unlimited freedom in combat and the ability to do anything he can imagine.

How Oda limits Luffy

Luffy has become so strong in One Piece that Oda himself must take certain measures so that he does not defeat his enemies easily. Oda said this about Luffy about 12 years ago:

“Luffy gives me the most problems. I have to slow him down with obstacles, otherwise he will quickly defeat the enemy. My characters act as if they have a will of their own. When I forced them to move for the story, my audience complained.”

Judged by his own words, even in 2012, Oda considered Luffy so powerful that enemies were not strong enough to take him in battle. Thus, Oda often had to rely on various limitations to ensure that enemies and enemy groups stood a chance against him. This usually came in the form of certain restrictions placed on Luffy.

For example, in the fight against Doflamingo, Luffy chose to fight the majority of the time in Gear Second and Gear Third, even when he had access to Gear 4. When he could have finished the fight with Gear 4, Oda makes Gear 4 end just before the final blow. This helped him increase the tension in the arc, and of course, made the whole thing more intense as well.
