“I’m Itching to Draw That”: Eiichiro Oda Hinted at Luffy Getting a Subtle Change that Would Make Him Fit to be the Ideal Pirate in One Piece

Luffy might finally become an ideal pirate in One Piece.

SUMMARY

In 2007, Oda mentioned a Pirate with an eye patch who was going to make a significant impact to One Piece.
Oda did not, however, address whether an eye patch will be given to an established character or whether a new one would be introduced.
Many fans speculated that the expected Pirate with the eye patch could be Monkey D. Luffy, the protagonist of One Piece.

As the final phase of One Piece has already started with the Egghead Island arc, there are still some storylines and characters that Eiichiro Oda has yet to introduce in the story. One of them is the anticipated “pirate with the eye patch”, who, according to the creator, might be one of the most important characters of the series.

In 2007, Oda talked about a pirate with an eye patch who was going to bring a huge change to One Piece. This came as a shock to One Piece fans because, despite One Piece being an anime and manga series about pirates, it has never once featured a pirate with the stereotypical eye patch.

However, Oda did not mention whether a new character would be introduced or whether an old character would get an eye patch. This led to many fans believing that the anticipated pirate with the eye patch might be the protagonist of One Piece, Monkey D. Luffy.

Eiichiro Oda is Eager to Draw The Pirate With An Eye Patch

One Piece celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2007, and Oda released “One Para,” where he made comments about the series and its future. Oda’s one particular comment about the eye patch pirate was translated and shared by @Sandman_AP on X. Oda confessed that he has been itching to draw a pirate with an eye patch who will make an appearance in the final phase of One Piece.

Oda stated:

“A pirate with an eye patch will appear in the final phase of One Piece. I’m itching to draw that character as soon as possible. Maybe people have a preconception that many pirates wear eye patches, but actually, I’ve never drawn any pirates with eye patches.”

In the translation, Oda pointed out that many people assume that the ideal physical appearance of a pirate requires him to have an eye patch, and although One Piece currently does not have any such pirates, soon there will be one who might bring a big twist to the One Piece narrative.

Fans Believe That The Pirate With An Eye Patch Will Be Luffy

After Eiichiro Oda’s comment about the “eye patch pirate” was shared on X, fans flooded the comments section with their assumptions about who the mysterious character could be and how he would be relevant to the conclusion of One Piece. There were many contenders for this role, but the most assumed character was Luffy.

Many fans believe that Luffy would lose one of his eyes while fighting one of the villains of One Piece, and this would lead to him wearing the eye patch.

Luffy being the protagonist is the perfect character for Oda to fulfill his wish for drawing the eye patch pirate. There are already theories about how losing one eye helps strengthen Haki abilities.

While there is a good chance that Luffy could be the eye patch pirate in One Piece, Oda’s talent for foreshadowing cannot be underestimated. However, the series has already entered the final phase, therefore the mysterious character would soon make an appearance in One Piece.
