Black Maria has massive potential but her hesitation for using poison ended up being a reason for her downfall.
One Piece has a lot of unique powers but some of the most terrifying ones can even kill a Straw Hat with ease.
The series has introduced us to the revolutionary power system of devil fruits. These are fruit shaped objects, when consumed, grant powers to a person.
One Piece had many innovational devil fruit powers such as Luffy’s Gum Gum Fruit, Kaidou’s Fish Fish Fruit, Law’s Op Op Fruit, and many more. Each has unique powers and provides destructive strength to their particular users. Some of these Devil Fruits have the power to potentially obliterate one of the strongest pirates in the series with absolute ease.
But many of them didn’t get a chance to gain a spotlight despite being respectably powerful, such as Black Maria.
Black Maria and her Devil Fruit: Spider Spider Fruit
Black Maria
In the Wano arc of One Piece, when Sanji is captured in a brothel on Onigashima, Nico Robin fights Black Maria to free him.
Black Maria’s Devil Fruit, Spider Spider Fruit, allowed her to transform into half spider half human and gave her the abilities of a spider.
She could spin webs, make traps, move around on 8 legs, and secrete poison. Her Devil Fruit is modeled around a spider that lived in the Triassic ages, with their hunting habits including just waiting around in their nest, which Maria replicated by staying in the brothel, luring in the attackers.
She was able to spin webs so sticky that no one would be able to escape from them. She also was able to create traps with them.
The fight was a turning point for Robin, as she was able to combine her devil fruit abilities with Fishman Karate and was able to present a new form to defeat Maria.
Maria’s hidden potential and her untimely end
Black Maria
Along with her powers that resembled that of a spider’s, Maria also could spit fire from the mouth on her spider half. Her legs were said to have bristles containing a deadly poison that could melt anything from the inside. While in the beginning stages of the battle, Robin wasn’t able to do anything because her cloned limbs from her Devil Fruit weren’t able to touch her without contracting the poison.
Maria’s downfall was ultimately related to her reluctance to use poison. Her venom, which could potentially kill anyone, if used on Robin would have ended the fight in her victory. Her stubbornness in tormenting Robin by beating her with her fists, rather than using her venom was the reason for her loss.
That being said, Maria had the potential to kill Robin with her devil fruit powers but lost because of inefficient usage.
