One Piece: Bonney’s Gear 5, Explained

Jewelry Bonney is one of the most important One Piece characters at the moment and much of that is down to her incredible role in the Egghead Island arc, along with Kuma. As fans know already, Bonney is Kuma’s adopted daughter and has spent her entire life to save her very own father. Bonney was revealed to be a 12-year-old child and the Egghead Island Arc, which is quite surprising for the fans, as it showcases her immense potential as a fighter in the One Piece world.

Of course, the intrigue that Bonney carries is also down to her amazing Devil Fruit, the Toshi Toshi no Mi, which was recently revealed to the fans. This is quite an incredible Devil Fruit and its power knows absolutely no limits.

Bonney’s Toshi Toshi Powers

The Toshi Toshi no Mi is a Paramecia type of Devil Fruit that fans have not seen at all in One Piece. Previously, it was believed that Bonney ate this Devil Fruit at a very young age. However, this misconception was shattered by Oda in the Egghead Island arc, where it was confirmed that it was Saturn who injected this Devil Fruit ability inside her body. When Bonney was still a baby, she was experimented upon by the Five Elders, specifically Saturn. Saturn injected the strain of the Devil Fruit inside her body because he wanted to see if babies could be injected with Devil Fruit powers without actually feeding them the ability itself. Needless to say, the experimentation was a success as the Devil Fruit was then rendered useless and Bonney was given these amazing abilities. Bonney then manifested these powers at a later point in life, and, ever since then, she has achieved great things as a pirate.

The powers of the Toshi Toshi no Mi are incredible as they allow her to manipulate her age, as well as the age of anyone she touches. Essentially, this was revealed to be the basic ability of the Devil Fruit. However, the true power of the Devil Fruit is far greater than that. As revealed in One Piece‘s Egghead Island arc, Bonney can bring forth any future imaginable possible through the power of Distorted Future. This makes her ability truly dangerous. However, the only catch here is that it must be something that Bonney truly believes in. As such, the narrower she thinks the possibility of a future being true, the lower the chances of her being able to transform into that particular future.

Bonney has used the power of Distorted Future on many occasions in the story already, such as when she transformed into a Buccaneer-like figure when fighting against Vegapunk, and later down the line, when she transformed into Nika while fighting against Alpha, and of course, Saturn as well. It is clear for the fans to see that her powers are nothing short of spectacular and that using the power of Distorted Future, she can technically utilize any other ability as well.

If Bonney wants to be a Buccaneer and believes herself to be one, then she can take a Buccaneer form at will. If she believes Nika to be real, then she can take a Nika-like form, which gives her rubber properties just like Luffy. Similarly, any power that Bonney knows is real and can imagine herself as, is one that she can claim for herself, which makes this Devil Fruit truly dangerous.

Why Luffy’s Gear 5 Is Essential For Bonney’s Growth

Luffy’s Gear 5 is directly tied to Bonney’s growth and this has been made clear in the story on many occasions. When Bonney was up against Saturn and tried transforming into a Nika-like future, she failed at doing so. This was down to the fact that her faith in Nika was wavering. Saturn immediately recognized the threat from her and tried to downplay Nika even further and he succeeded in doing so, as Bonney’s transformation into a Nika-like future started to fail. This in itself is proof of the fact that Bonney needs faith in order for her ability to work properly. This has come in the form of Luffy transforming into his Nika state using Gear 5 recently in the story.

After Luffy was exhausted following his fight against Kizaru, he has now filled up once again and, thanks to him being at full power, accessed the ability of Gear 5.

In the previous chapter of One Piece, Bonney witnessed the power of Gear 5 firsthand and connected the dots as well. She realized that Luffy is, in fact, Nika and that he is the Warrior of Liberation that she was always looking for. This has strengthened Bonney’s faith in Luffy and this means her Nika-like transformation will start to work once again. Bonney will be freely able to utilize Luffy’s rubber-like abilities, however, her powers won’t just stop there. Now, Bonney will be able to take things a step further.

Bonney’s True Potential – Gear 5

Now that Bonney has seen Luffy transform into Gear 5, the true potential of her Devil Fruit will be revealed. Bonney will inevitably witness Luffy using many powerful attacks in Gear 5. In fact, Luffy will likely even demonstrate some of his abilities to Bonney. The powers that he possessed, such as Dawn Gatling, among others, will be witnessed by Bonney firsthand. In this way, Luffy would be mentoring Bonney in terms of how to use the rubber-like abilities. Once he does that, Bonney should be able to access these abilities on her own. This simply means that Bonney can access the power of Gear 5 herself.

This can go in two ways. Either Bonney can actually manifest a white-haired transformation, or, she can simply use the ability of Gear 5 without actually transforming into Gear 5. Both options are plausible and could work, and regardless of what option Oda takes, Bonney’s powers will be truly frightening.

Bonney will be almost unstoppable in battle once she taps into the power of Gear 5 and this will likely come very soon in the story. In fact, fans should not be surprised to see this in the Egghead Island arc of One Piece, where the true potential of a Devil Fruit will shine.

Once Bonney taps into this power, she will then have a very bright future ahead of herself. Fans must remember that she’s just 12 years old right now and by the time she hits her 20s, Bonney will have already established herself as one of the mightiest on the seas. Her Devil Fruit ability is nothing short of staggering and with great people to look up to, such as Luffy and Kuma, she will be a force to be reckoned with.
