In a mainstream media crossover, a news post about Taylor Swift and Ice Spice prompted One Piece fans to flood its comment section with Luffy images.

One Piece's Luffy and Taylor Swift

In a seemingly bizarre mainstream media crossover, a recent news post about Taylor Swift and Ice Spice prompted One Piece fans to flood the article’s comment section with images of famous anime pirate Monkey D. Luffy.

Via the Everything Out Of Context X (formerly Twitter) account, a simple mention of “One Piece” on a popular Instagram page’s Taylor Swift news article prompted fans to swarm the comment section with memes and references from the series. Below, readers can check out the clip and news post, captioned “Ice Spice Reveals the One Piece of Advice Taylor Swift Gave Her.” For the record, Taylor Swift’s advice was, “No matter what, just keep making music and everything’s going to be fine.”

Jujutsu Kaisen Fans Previously Took Over a NASA Johnson Space Center Post

One Piece fans are far from the only anime fans to take over a comment section of an otherwise unrelated post. After NASA’s Johnson Space Center wished the public a happy new year earlier in 2024, posting a shot of the nighttime sky above Japan, Jujutsu Kaisen fans noted the image’s stark similarity to Shibuya in the Season 2 opening, “SPECIALZ.” This prompted Jujutsu Kaisen fans to take over the NASA post with a flood of “You are my Specialz!” messages.

One Piece is similarly set to dominate the airwaves for the rest of the year, starting with Luffy’s special birthday on May 5, 2024. Toei Animation Europe will simultaneously launch massive inflatable balloons across major European cities. On the same day, Crunchyroll has announced a drop of several One Piece episodes that will be coming to the platform, including the iconic Gear 5 episode.

Crunchyroll streams One Piece, describing it: “Monkey. D. Luffy refuses to let anyone or anything stand in the way of his quest to become the king of all pirates. With a course charted for the treacherous waters of the Grand Line and beyond, this is one captain who’ll never give up until he’s claimed the greatest treasure on Earth: the Legendary One Piece!” The original and ongoing One Piece manga, created by Eiichiro Oda, is licensed by Viz Media for North American readers.
