After the admirals were introduced in the One Piece series, they were known as the absolute forces of justice. Among the admirals, the first to be introduced was Kuzan, who was introduced as Admiral Aokiji.

With his concept of lazy justice and the Hie Hie no Mi, Kuzan quickly became one of the most recognizable people in the series. Kuzan’s devil fruit, the Hie Hie no Mi, turned him into a freezing human with the ice element. After mastery of the fruit, Kuzan became a feared human in the One Piece series. Moreover, with the Hie Hie no Mi, Kuzan has accomplished various feats that make him feared such as including joining Blackbeard’s crew.

The Hie Hie no Mi is a logia-type devil fruit that grants its user the ability to manipulate ice, turning the user into a freezing human. The current user of the Hie Hie no Mi has shown mastery of the fruit; and with it, has played major roles in world-shaking battles of the One Piece series. As a devil fruit with a freezing element, the Hie Hie no Mi has been portrayed to have similar but superior effects to the Snow Snow fruit formerly owned by Monet while she was alive.

In most battlefields, the Hie Hie no Mi has a tactical advantage due to its large-scale environmental modification. During the war of Marineford, Aokiji froze the bay, stopping pirate ships from advancing further. Because of how the fruit can be used for tactical strategies and pure combat, the user of the Hie Hie no Mi is feared in various aspects.

Strengths And Weaknesses Of The Hie Hie No Mi

The Hie Hie no Mi is powerful even among other logia devil fruits as it allows its user to manipulate sea water, which would normally be a devil fruit’s user bane. With his devil fruit, Kuzan can freeze seawater and stop tsunamis as seen in the Marineford arc, or even just freeze the sea, allowing people to walk over it from one island to another. Kuzan himself often rides a bicycle across the sea, freezing a line of water for the bicycle to follow. In terms of effects, the Hie Hie no Mi is particularly potent, as in instances when Kuzan froze the sea or people, he stated that they could be in that state for days on end.

Compared to other devil fruits, the Hie Hie no Mi ranks high in terms of versatility. With it, Kuzan can attack from a distance, or simply freeze his targets by coming into contact with them.

While the Hie Hie no Mi is without a doubt powerful, it also comes with weaknesses unique to it. As an ice-based devil fruit, it is easily countered by fire, or magma-based devil fruits, as Kuzan’s ice could be easily melted.

As fans remember, all devil fruits have common weaknesses, such as seawater, haki, and sea stones. With the Hie Hie no Mi, seawater has a reduced effect on its user, as Kuzan can simply freeze the water turning it into a solid state. This advantage of the Hie Hie no Mi also comes with a weakness. Because it is a solid-state devil fruit and not fluid, despite being a logia fruit, the user of the Hie Hie no Mi is not able to simply let attacks pass through them as Akainu or Kizaru can. Rather than take attacks without haki with wild abandon, the user of the Hie Hie no Mi reshapes their body to dodge attacks, as seen with Aokiji reforming his body right before Whitebeard stabbed through him during the Marineford War.

Kuzan’s Mastery Of The Hie Hie No Mi

Aokiji’s Devil Fruit Helps Him Carry Out His Lazy Justice

Kuzan’s mastery of the Hie Hie no Mi is by no means meager. With his devil fruit, he has been able to face adversaries such as Garp, Cracker, and Akainu.

Unlike his fellow admirals, Kuzan tends to act as he sees fit in a given situation rather than clinging to rigid ideals and morals like Akainu. His ‘lazy justice’ approach shows his flexibility and adaptability, as he carries out justice in a more laid-back manner compared to Akainu’s absolute justice, which seeks to eradicate all pirates. Despite his devil fruit being a rigid element, Kuzan’s flexible approach sets him apart from his peers, and his devil fruit has enabled him to make his mark on various characters and the series as a whole.

Apart from pure combat, Kuzan also knows how to use his devil fruit for support, as seen with his crafting a new leg made of ice after he lost his old one to Akainu. With the Hie Hie no Mi, Kuzan was able to fight Akainu for 10 days straight, despite Akainu’s devil fruit, the Magma Magma fruit having a clear advantage over it. While water and fire may be opposites, ice and magma are not, as magma is a semi-fluid state of liquid rock matter. Despite Akainu’s inherent advantage in their battle, Kuzan managed to keep up with him for 10 days straight, eventually changing the weather of a part of the island, into one of chilly frost

Possible Awakening Of The Hie Hie No Mi

Speculation Surrounding Kuzan’s Logia Awakening

So far, only zoan and paramecia fruits in the One Piece series have been awakened. With logia fruits, fans can only speculate about what the awakening would be like. However, some fans speculate that Kuzan and Akainu’s battle on Punk Hazard which changed the very geographical state of the island, could be because of their fruit’s awakening. If a logia’s awakening changes the very nature of the environment into the user’s element, then the speculation could be very well true.
