Shanks as Roger’s successor

Shanks was always intended to be an incredibly important character. In fact, from the start, it was clear that Shanks would rise to the top of the One Piece world, and this was largely due to his ancestry as a Celestial Dragon. Shanks belongs to a royal family, most likely being the child of Saint Garling Figarland. He was present at God Valley, where Saint Garling ended up participating in the Hunting Games.

Ultimately, it was Roger’s Pirates who found Shanks, and Roger decided to raise him as his own apprentice. As Buggy himself stated at one point in the story, Shanks was destined to be the next Pirate King . Shanks himself wanted to search for One Piece at one point. This was confirmed in the story when Shanks and Buggy failed to make it to the final island, Laugh Tale. Shanks wanted Buggy to go to the final island with him on his ship . However, as the series progressed, Shanks’ role in the story changed.

Despite being Roger’s successor, Shanks was no longer going to be the pirate to claim One Piece. On the day of Roger’s execution, Shanks decided he didn’t want to go get the One Piece, at least not then. Even though Buggy called him Roger’s own successor, Shanks decided to become a pirate, but not do what was expected of him. It was quite curious, and it clearly suggested that something had happened between Roger and Shanks that had ended up changing their minds.

Shanks clearly intended to claim One Piece at some point in history. In fact, even now, Shanks is in the running for One Piece, as he himself claimed. However, right after Roger’s execution, he decided to take a very curious path. Shanks became a pirate and sailed the seas.

Eventually, Shanks established himself as a veteran pirate, and by the time he was back in the East Blue, he decided to attack a Government ship. Shanks knew this, which means he must have had prior information about this fruit holding the power of Nika, the Sun God.

At the time, this fruit was guarded by Who’s Who and potentially other members of CP9. Shanks easily defeated them and stole the Gomu Gomu no Mi , which meant he now had one of the most incredible powers in all of history in his hands. Yet, he chose not to eat this incredible devil fruit.

If he had eaten it, perhaps he would have become the strongest in the history of the One Piece world. Fans already know how strong Shanks is at this point in the story , and this level of strength was achieved by him without even having a devil fruit power. If, on top of that, Shanks had a devil fruit, he would have had enough power to conquer the entire world.
