Lionel Messi consistently receives high praise from some of the greatest figures in the history of football.

Earlier this year, former Real Madrid star, Xabi Alonso offered insights into why the Argentine maestro is exceptionally talented while drawing comparisons with Bayer Leverkusen standout, Florian Wirtz.

Having faced Messi in El Clasico clashes during their playing days in Spain, Alonso – who is now the manager of Bayer Leverkusen – is ideally placed to draw parallels between the veteran and his star player, recognising similarities in their playing styles.

In an interview earlier this year, as noted by Sportskeeda, Alonso delved into what sets the Argentine apart from other players.

The ex-Liverpool midfielder pointed out that Messi’s exceptional quality lies in his capability to make intelligent decisions on the field.

Alonso further emphasised that Wirtz shares this particular attribute with Inter Miami’s 2023 VIP player, per GOAL:

“Why is Messi so good? Because he knows how and when to play simple passes. Messi says: ‘You’re in a better position? Here, there you have the ball!’ It’s not always about making the most brilliant move, but the best and smartest. Florian can do that. That’s why he’s so good,” Alonso stated.

How Wirtz has fared this season

It is noteworthy that Wirtz has garnered comparisons to the World Cup winner since making a breakthrough in the German top flight a few years ago.

The talented attacking midfielder has attracted interest from various clubs across Europe, with rumours even linking him to Messi’s former club, Barcelona, per ESPN.

In the current season so far, the 20-year-old has scored six goals and provided 10 assists for Leverkusen across various competitions.

Given his outstanding performance, only time will reveal how much longer the Bundesliga side can retain him, considering the growing interest in his talent.

Alonso dismisses Real Madrid rumours

Earlier, Sports Brief reported on Bayer Leverkusen director, Simon Rolfes rubbishing reports linking Alonso with Real Madrid when current manager, Carlo Ancelotti leaves.

The Spaniard spent five years at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, winning La Liga and the Champions League, and he ended as one of the best midfielders of his generation.

Alonso’s Leverkusen are unbeaten in the Bundesliga after six games this season, only dropping points in the 2-2 draw against reigning German champions, Bayern Munich.
