Matt LaFleur suffered an unfortunate injury while weightlifting, the Green Bay Packers head coach announced on Friday.

While speaking to reporters, Matt LaFleur revealed that he suffered a torn pectoral muscle while bench pressing. Per The Athletic’s Matt Schneidman, LaFleur said that he “lost” a fight with the bench press.

LaFleur has been present at team activities and practices, so it looks as though the injury won’t keep him sidelined. LaFleur is entering his sixth season as Green Bay’s head coach, having just guided them to their fourth playoff appearance in five years.

Green Bay is getting its rookies together and prepared following the conclusion of the NFL Draft last week. They used their first-round pick on Arizona offensive tackle Jordan Morgan, with the hope that he’ll be able to protect Jordan Love’s blindside after the release of David Bakhtiari.

Green Bay looked finished after falling to 3-6 last season, but the team rallied in the second half under quarterback Jordan Love despite a rash of injuries to key players. Green Bay finished 6-2 to lock down the NFC’s No. 7 speed, and they went on to crush the Dallas Cowboys on Wild Card Weekend before falling to the San Francisco 49ers in the Divisional Round.

Matt LaFleur & Packers Should Be Contenders In 2024

The Packers were supposed to endure a painful rebuild following the departure of Aaron Rodgers last year, but Love turned out to be far more NFL-ready than most expected.

Love grew into his own as a star quarterback, nearly leading Green Bay to the NFC Championship Game appearance in his first year as their starting signal-caller. Having reached the elite eight last season, expectations have naturally grown for a Green Bay club to re-emerge as a Super Bowl contender.

The Packers have played in three NFC Championship Games under LaFleur, and they twice finished as the NFC’s top seed. If Love is able to build off his unexpected success from last year, the Pack should be in the mix for a Super Bowl championship
