How Rashee Rice Became One of Patrick Mahomes's Top Targets

The Kansas City Chiefs are coming off the season of a lifetime. The team was a major story throughout the 2023 NFL season and won their second Super Bowl in a row. However, it hasn’t been all good new for the Chiefs. James Palmer recently appeared on Steve Smith’s Agent 89 Breakdown Show and dropped a spicy take on a potential Rashee Rice suspension.

According to NFL.com’s James Palmer, the Kansas City Chiefs expect that Rashee Rice will receive a hefty suspension. Palmer said that the Chiefs are expecting the suspension could be at least half a season.

We won’t know if Rice actually gets suspended for a while. Roger Goodell and Clark Hunt have both gone on the record about letting the legal process play out before doling out any punishment. However, it seems that the league has the terms of a possible suspension planned already.

This is not the first time a Chief would be suspended in the past couple of seasons. Will Gay Jr. was suspended four games in 2022 and Justyn Ross missed six games last year, though he was not a significant contributor.

Rashee Rice was the best receiver in a sub-par position group in 2023. He caught 79 passes for 938 yards and seven TDs. A lengthy suspension for Rice would be a problem for the Chiefs, but one they could certainly overcome. The Chiefs invested in reworking their wide receiver room this offseason, adding Marquise “Hollywood” Brown during free agency and spending a first-round pick on the speedy Xavier Worthy.

Kansas City will need some serious contributions from both Brown and Worthy if they want to three-peat as Super Bowl champions.

The Kansas City Chiefs entered the 2024 NFL Draft with needs at offensive tackle, wide receiver, and on the defensive line.

The Chiefs selected the following players in the 2024 NFL Draft:

Xavier Worthy – WR – First round (28th overall)
Kingsley Suamataia – T – Second round (63rd overall)
Jared Wiley – TE – Fourth round (131st overall)
Jaden Hicks – S – Fourth round (133rd overall)
Hunter Nourzad – C/G – Fifth round (159th overall)
Kamal Hadden – CB – Sixth round (211th overall)
C.J. Hanson – G – Seventh round (248th overall)

As noted above, Xavier Worthy is a huge addition to the Chiefs. He is the fastest receiver in NFL Scouting Combine history as measured by the 40-yard dash. Worthy isn’t the same type of player as Tyreek Hill, but it is hard not to imagine Andy Reid making use of Worthy’s speed in a similar fashion. Expectations will be high for Worthy in his rookie season.

Kingsley Suamataia is another important addition. Suamataia is the cousin of Lions star tackle Penei Sewell and plays with a similar ferociousness. He will compete with Wanya Morris as the team’s starting left tackle and has the versatility to fill in at right tackle when needed.

The Chiefs also added interior depth with Nourzad and Hanson and invested in a young tight end Jared Wiley who can sit and learn behind Travis Kelce for the next several seasons.
