Super Bowl Jersey - Patrick Mahomes

Patrick Mahomes made a rare blunder when bringing attention to a moment he wanted hidden.

Patrick Mahomes

On Wednesday night, the star quarterback asked the NFL Network to stop using his 40-yard dash from the 2017 NFL Scouting Combine in overlays alongside other players running the drill at Indianapolis. That unsurprisingly emboldened the telecast to ignore his request.

Florida State defensive tackle Braden Fiske ran the 40-yard dash in 4.78 seconds on Thursday. The 6-foot-5, 297-pounder narrowly beat out Mahomes’ 4.8 time.

NFL Network broke out the overlay to show Fiske crossing the finish line before Mahomes. On the bright side, they also included 366-pound Texas Longhorns lineman T’Vondre Sweat running the sprint in 5.27 seconds.

“The good news is, Patrick, for the first time in your life, you’re happy to finish second,” Rich Eisen quipped.

Here’s a look at the NFL’s top-notch trolling:

Mahomes may not be the fastest sprinter in shorts, but that’s hardly mattered.

The former No. 10 pick led the Kansas City Chiefs to their third Super Bowl title in five years with 66 rushing yards in a 25-22 overtime win over the San Francisco 49ers. He’s already making a case to go down as an-time great.

Mahomes at least ran the 40 faster than Tom Brady, who clocked in at 5.28 seconds 24 years ago. However, the retired superstar just beat that time with a 5.12 finish at age 46.

Maybe Mahomes can follow the seven-time Super Bowl champion’s lead and see if he’s any faster now. Just don’t share the results if his time goes the wrong way.
