An all-woman ensemble works best with an accomplished female director. While Nia DaCosta seemed to be the perfect choice to helm The Marvels, the director’s journey from filming to production was marred by a lot of backlash and criticism that she received from various corners.
One of the main bones of contention regarding DaCosta was the fact that she relocated to the UK to start work on another film, in the middle of various reshoots and post-production issues that were plaguing The Marvels.

While social media ripped apart DaCosta for her apparent disinterest and callousness regarding the project she was helming, the filmmaker went public to clarify that these were all speculations that did not have any truth to them. In an interview with Jake’s Takes, she laid down the chain of events which proved that she was the person who was put in difficulty due to issues surrounding The Marvels.
“Instead of being a two-year process, which I was deeply committed to, it became a three-and-a-half-year process… and they knew the entire time that I had an obligation, a greenlit movie with people that were waiting for me.”
Now, DaCosta’s detractors are being made to eat their words regarding their opinion on the director, as The Marvels is looking to rule the box office based on the initial reactions to the film.
